9th July 2011 - Tharwa Challenge 105 km reconnaissance

Postby yyeric » Mon Jun 20, 2011 7:19 pm

I am keen to do a ride following the Fitz's Challenge 105km version out to Tharwa. Looking at on my schedule, it looks like 9th July's the best day for me. Anyone like to come along for a relaxed ride (easy pace :)) in preparation for the Fitz's this year?

Say meeting at Stromlo Forest Park at 8AM.

From Tharwa 105km, you can see the profile of the 105km around Tidbinbilla.

Note that DBR's Junior Tour is happening on the same weekend so on the return leg, we won't actually go down to Uriarra Homestead and Three Sisters, will just come back via Cotter Road.

PS, I am sure there will be a few more rides like this from me in August, September too.

PS#2, Also, there are still heaps of volunteers needed for the DBR Junior Tour, if you are free on the weekend, put your hands up to help our with this great tour.

May have another commitment that weekend, but if the 9th ends up going unused then I'd be keen

It's only 105km (plus the commute from ANU) not sure if it would be far enough for you! You might have to do it twice! :P
I may come along, won't know until closer to the day for sure.

Ross, I'm still on the donuts so I'll probably struggle.

For me, it's a tough loop - the undulations and false flats really zap your legs. I did the loop a few times before going to Cairns and was alot more fatigued after it than the 140k+ sessions on the Federal Highway.

Are you or Eric doing the ITT this Sunday? I was a 99% starter until being scared off by the "inspections of helmets". I bought my Bell off Wiggle so it's missing the all important sticker.

I plan to do the ITT. The helmet checking is pretty random, they never got checked at Canberra Tour and I've only had my TT helmet checked once at a club race but my normal road helmet was checked before the start of a club race a couple of weeks ago.

they checked my helment on the last ITT (which was basically the #1 of the series, this Sunday's #2).

Hey guys,

I did a cotter - uriarra ride on Sat and noticed signage in the area notifying the closure of Uriarra Rd on Fri, Sat and Sun of that week end due to a cycle race. So I'm not sure this ride will be doable that week end

That's because of the DBR Women's and Junior Tour is on, yyeric mentioned that in his first post.

Yeah it's the DBR tour on the same weekend. We won't go clash with them on Uriarra Road though. Our route travels on Cotter Road. On the return leg, I think skipping Mt MacDonald and Three Sisters will be a wise decision to avoid the peleton (replace it with Mt Stromlo with coffee on Scope).

I hope to be in although if I am I might not have enough time to do the return leg. Got the landlord coming over Sat late morning to do some repairs on the house. Depending on time we make I might cruise back through Tuggers from Tharwa.

Well let you know tomorrow evening if i'm in :).

Hope the wind dies down for you. Just did 50km and it a struggle into that head wind!

No inspection, just repairs as the house & garage had dropped after all the dry weather then wet stuff last year.

Thanks Ross and Simon for the ride. Pleasant day with very minimal traffic on the whatever road it's called from Pierce Creek to Tharwa.

Did my first ride to Tharwa Bridge and it looks like a awesome TT course to my liking.

Will take on Ross's suggestions to go to Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve for the 3km circuit next time for sure.

Wind only come to the equation from Tuggers back to City.

Thanks Ross for the tow. Would have popped a lot earlier without you.

Hope Simon you've got home without problems! :)

104km for me today. Tomorrow will be marshalling at the junior/women tour at SPF + photo at arvo crit. :D
