Mawson Trail Sout Australia

Postby Brownster » Wed May 18, 2011 9:07 pm

Just wondering if anyone here has completed the 900km MTB Mawson Trail?
Looking at getting a group together for next year to complete what sounds like is an awesome trail thru SA.

I have found a few website's but nothing really good yet.

Gee Brownster I thought you'd be awash with replies.

I'd like to hear from others who have done it too. I'd love to ride the northern section some day.

Can anyone comment on the 'quality of and requirement for the maps? Is the route obvious from the markers? :?:

Look in the Touring and South Australia sub forums or search.

Maps are good.
Route is obvious from markers but it is possible to miss them.
When lost maps help IMHO.

Thanks for that. Looks like some good topics in the touring section as well as the SA.

The maps are good, you could well get lost going by markers only. Also suggest taking some RAA district maps (like Flinders Ranges etc), sometimes the trail can get close to the edge of the topo maps, if you ride off the edge it can be harder to find where you are. Also you could use a GPS to make riding easier.

A link to a GPX file, this one from riding the trail myself, from Athelstone through to Mt Little (north of Hawker), I corrected any getting lost errors:

I have a GPX file of the entire trail, which is not as detailed, but does cover the 2-4 days between Mt Little and Blinman.

I'm planning to finish off the trail in October this year, just 3 days left to Blinman.
