Constantly running nose while cycling

Postby Patches » Sat Jul 16, 2011 9:46 pm

Not sure if there's much I can do about it, but has anyone else had their nose starting to run like a tap after a few minutes of riding? Hot or cold doesn't seem to make a difference, and even when my nose is completely clear before I leave I inevitably end up with snot all over my face after a few minutes. Does anyone have any idea if nasal drops, antihistemines (though I don't have any allergies or hayever as far as I know) and so on would help? Thanks!

I get this problem too, but only really in cold weather.

I've found horseradish and garlic tablets help stop the drip for me. Prolly no science behind it but it works for this sample of one.
YMMV.

Yeah, me too. Every ride but much worse in cold weather. It is known as exercise induced rhinitis and is pretty common. There is a prescription nasal spray designed to deal with this (I know you can get it in the US but not sure about here) but I don't remember its name :-( I just tolerate it or blow my nose.

When I rode a bike I used to use a balaclava that covered then nose during the colder times. That way after a few minutes the air was being drawn through a layer of warmed wool.

Cold weather, I get the effect too. I use the farmer's hanky. Just need to make sure noone's too close

The horseradish and garlic tabs work a treat. We keep them on hand for treating cold and flu, along with echinacea and megadoses of Vitamin C. Reduces the severtiy and length of the cold from 10 days to 3. Not having to use anything with pseudoephedrine to keep the monster snot rockets at bay also means I can sleep instead of being kept wide awake feeling like atwitchy critter tossing and turning all night.

Works far better than the lame pseudoephedrine substitutes they're putting on the market to beat the methamphetamine labs. Those new "substitutes" do nothing for me whatsoever.

Can you get all that in a single tab?

It would be the size of a large marble if it was in one tablet.

Having shares in Blackmores helps. ;)

I'm a confirmed sceptic of a lot of the alternative medical theories. Some of it is so far out in left field it's gone around the planet and is coming up on your right hand side. "Lala land" would be being kind when describing the frameworks. Nevertheless, I think they've discovered stuff that works, the practitioners just have no real idea that is based in experimental medicine or anything that looks like they understand cellular biology.

Good sign!

1) You are alive with warm blood.
2) Your nasal passage is warm and humid, doing its job well.
3) You are a nasal breather.

It's a natural outcome with cold air. The condensation of moisture in the air accumulates and drips out... That's all.

I have the same problem with runny nose, especially in the cooler weather. I regualrly take horseradish and garlic as well as echinacea and Multi Vitamin tabs but they don't seem to help (not that I take them for this purpose, just fro general health and wellbeing).

Are we looking for an answer here to a natural human reaction to cold weather? Noses run when it's cold. I've been in the sub-Antarctic for the last 3 months and yes my nose runs down here too... non stop. It's actually a pretty good indicator of how cold it is, when it freezes on your moustache, the temp & wind chill means its rather chilly

So what do you guys ride down there? A Surly Moonlander? :D

At least the peak hour traffic is pretty minimal on the ride to work. ;)

Very annoying - I always make sure I have tissues in on of my jersey pockets. I suffer from hayfever and allergies. Might try the horseradish/garlic tablets again haven't taken them in years but back then I wasn't in to cycling.

Sadly no bikes down here, but an exercise bike in the gym. Haven't used it though, pretty much all my work is field based with lots of walking. Thus much experience in 2 deg temps, drizzle, 30kn winds and a bloody nose that won't stop dripping like a tap.
