I'll sign-up as soon as I see how the recovery is from minor knee surgery and Mrs Monsoon will sign-up when she is happy with her recovery from a fractured kneecap.

First Spring Cycle last year was great despite a fall. We plan to make this one a weekend event. Go to Sydney Saturday morning for shopping, dinner out Saturdsay night and stay over Sunday night rather than drive back to Lake Macquarie Sunday afternoon.

City Ride (approx. 16km)

NEW for 2011! We are very excited about this year's new ride option, the City Ride. This shorter option at 16km, is the ideal introduction to the event for families, occasional riders and those new to bike riding. Featuring many of the star attractions of the Classic Ride, the City Ride also starts in North Sydney, crosses the Harbour Bridge and takes in iconic City landmarks. The City Ride crosses the finish line at Pirrama Park in Pyrmont.
This sounds like a great option to take my girlfriend along to on our beach cruisers

BNSW announced MC Cyclery & Giant are the Headline sponsors! The reason to be excited about this is they plan to have the whole fleet of Giant bicycles at SOP for test riding at the end of the ride. Might be time to take a TCR Advance 1 for a spin :D

Well, I have my arthroscopy on Wednesday (June 15) and I think that injury is just from old age and stupidity. It is the second on the same knee..

Mrs Monsoon tyre-rubbed me at 25km/h about 10 weeks or so ago and hit the deck. Landed on her head and her knee. her knee was not wearing a helmet and the kneecap cracked. The tibia was also badly bruised.

She is still recovering and is almost back to normal so I figure we wil lboth be back on our bikes in about a month to start thye ride recovery process.

Anyone know when the 16km CityRide route map will be released? My Mrs is keen for that one.

Entries are open, however the $60 entry fee is a bit steep (although I imagine the organising costs, with things like insurance would be rather substantial), and the 7am start is something I am not looking forward to. By the time I catch the train to the start, ride the train in, and be there for the 7am start, the alarm will be going off at a rude hour.

I agree timbo. I wonder if as the event expands they can allow the other way from SOP to North Sydney and say ending up at one of the parks around there? I would love to attend the event but the early morning start and the fact that I will be basically doing a boomerang trip isn't attractive. However, happy to congregate at the end of it, bring out my pom poms and cheer the riders at the end! (It's the thought that counts ;-) )

I'll most likely be doing the Spring Cycle but won't (should say, can't) sign up until it goes on general sale. :) $60 is a bit but it's far from outrageous.

7am start and I've got to make it down from the Central Coast by train to get there... I think I'll manage, just excuse me while I ride slowly at the back enjoying myself 8)

Will be doing it again this year with a bunch of workmates. Last year was fun, although a bit lonely: workmate who I was hoping would keep me company (the rest are only occasional riders) was ill, and I was getting cold waiting around, so I struck out on my own, and then rode back to the car at Crow's Nest. I did the 50-odd kms in 2 hours 35 from memory.

They all thought that was stunningly fast, and then, for doing the ride back, that I was bonkers

Weather was really nice. Made for a great training ride. 8)

I'll be riding from SOP to the start at North Sydney, just to ride back to my place at SOP! Probably hit off at 5:50am so I can mingle at the start.
Is there a BNA Forums meeting area at the finish line? I'll wear a dark suit with a white rose in the lapel 8)

If anyone is contemplating travelling to the start by train, you should check for possible trackwork closer to the date.
The long term trackwork plan sees quite a few lines interupted on the day.

Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 October (weekend)
Western Line
Buses replace trains between St Marys and Granville and also between Richmond and Granville.
B
lue Mountains Line
Buses replace trains between Penrith and Central.
Carlingford Line
Buses replace trains between Carlingford and Clyde.
Airport & East Hills Line
Buses replace trains between East Hills and Kingsgrove.

Last year we drove down from Newie on the Saturday night, found a nice little boutique hotel on the north shore to stay the night, rode to the start, did the ride, trained it back to North Sydney, rode back to the hotel, collected the car and drove home.

This year we will stay the Sunday night as well and head back home on ht eMonday morning. Make a full weekend of it.

Sorry to sound like a tight arse, but $60 does sound like a lot of money to me. I know the fee is comparable to the City to Surf, and the Wollongong ride, but I'm sure that when I did these things years ago, the entry fee was really small. Did all these fees just rise meteorically recently or am I reminiscing too much about when things were cheaper in my day?

It costs a bucketload of money for all the lane closures, cops, St John's Ambulance guys and everything else that goes into it. even the train ride home is free for those who take part. Anyway, it's fully tax-deductable because it is a donation to a recognised charity.

Only $5 goes to charity.

Entry fee also doesn't include insurance.

Spring Cycle riders who are Bicycle NSW members are covered under Bicycle NSW Member insurance which includes Personal Accident and Public Liability cover. Spring Cycle riders who are not Bicycle NSW members are not covered from this insurance.

I guess if you have to pay for all the cops, it does cost money.

City to Surf costs $60 and it has sold out. Sydney people obviously don't think it is too expensive.

Let's face it: you can drop $60 on lunch and another $40 at the movies. Think I'd rather do Spring Cycle and get something besides a feed and a show for it. I actually kept my "gold medal" from last year. It was worth the cost of the entry.

I reckon it's getting a bit much. I might spread my rides every 2 years. I'd love to do it again but $60 a pop can be used elsewhere.

I thought that costs of fundraising weren't allowed to exceed 50% in NSW

This is from the NSW Govt Fact Sheet

"Fundraising expenses
Persons or organisations conducting appeals
for donations only must take all reasonable
steps to ensure that total expenses payable do
not amount to more than 50% of the
gross proceeds.
In all other forms of fundraising, such as the
sale of goods and services, the return must be
fair and reasonable."

Perhaps they have some kind of dispensation.
