GC100 2011

Postby hosko » Mon Jun 27, 2011 9:54 pm

http://www.gc100.org/

Looks to be on again this year, not to be confused with the Brisband - GC ride which is a month later.

I will be trying to get the day off from the family so I can participate. Looks to be not a flat compared to the quite flat B2GC ride.

Interested to see how many Bris/GC people will be doing this one.

I'm planning to come up for the Bris - GC and am hoping for a better outcome than last year where I ended up doing a power test in my mate's garage due to the weather. I reckon that hurt a heap more than the actual ride would have!

The GC100 sounds like a good one.
The 100 km ride starts and finishes on the Broadwater and meanders through the hinterland.
Starts at 0 elevation and goes up to 125 m - total climb 851, total descent 853. (must finish underwater)
The 50 km starts and finishes ditto but stays out of the hills.

Did anyone here do the last one?

I can't open it either. I'm just getting some old cached pages. It looks like GC100.org site is down.
The registration page works though:-

Noticed your posts, and yes site is temporarily down. There is an issue with Event Director at present. Hopefully be back up in next 24 hours.
It is a great ride, got some good feedback from experienced riders.
If you send enquiry from site (when back up) I can add you to mail list, or better still register for event.
Thanks

Did the last ride, quite good for a few reasons.

#1: Not as crowded as the Brisi - Gold Coast
#2: Quite challenging.

The hills were breathtaking at times and surprised me and the SE on the way back in also hurt a bit. It was well organised and we got some Breaky and a T-Shirt at the end of the ride.

I recommend that you do this ride if you can!

Have signed up this afternoon
Got C566 as my registration number. No idea if that means already 566 people have signed up or not as yet??

A few of the guys at work road the course last week. It is challenging according to them so when it asked what time will you do it in, I elected the slowest possible just in case.

Will be my first charity ride! Now to shed some KG for those hills in 4 weeks time. Would like 10kg off before then.

When you are 110kg there are bloody hills!!

But yes I agree, there really isn't is there.... (mind over matter)

Beachmont this weekend, if I can push that then I can push this. Have toned up heaps, just get rid of the kg!

A_P I think the idea is that everyone who has a crack majority will finish rather than taking around 2 full size buses as Sag Wagons :P

Not confusing it with the Brisy to Goldy are you Steve?

Doesn't look too bad to me actually, i can only really see 2 big hills on it, the rest i would just call rolling (without having actually seen it).

Waiting for this weeks pay to reach my account and then registering :-).

Re: GC100 2011 - What to take?

Postby hosko » Fri Aug 19, 2011 7:18 am

Righto - haven't done one of the charity rides before, so I am expecting there are a few who go at serious pace and other who just go at their own pace....

Nutrition for something like this? What do people generally take with them on course?

Yes it's only 100km, but it's not flat like BNE-GC so some effort is going to need to be made during this ride.

I was personally thinking something like a nut bar (granola bar..etc) maybe? Sustained energy?

Also for the people who did this last year, what was available at the checkpoint/water stations. My guess would be you can refill water bottles there however anything else available (gatorade...etc)

My approach to any 100k is the same, big breakfast beforehand, go flat knacker the whole way (because then it's over sooner) and take 2 water bottles and 2 powerbars. More often than not i don't need the powerbars, just in case i have a mechanical or flat that i have to stop for, that seems to take the wind out of my sails.

For a 100k+ ride I'll take 2 bottles and something that wont melt in my back pocket that's a little sweet - usually some scotch finger biscuits is enough to fuel me :D

Just to clarify, there are hills, some very decent gradients too. I got up to 16% a couple of times on the ride so it is nothing like the Brisi - GC ride later on. So, get your climbing legs on if you are going to do this ride. The good thing is though is that the hills are in the middle third of the ride so you are warm by the time you hit the first wall at Mugeereba.

Did you do the Ride the Range in Toowoomba earlier this year? How do you think it compares to that? I had expected that one to be one super fast downhill at the start, one super steep climb at the end and perfectly flat in between but i was really surprised by how big and steep some of the hills in the valley were.

Nope did not do that but did ride the Ipswich 100 miler and it is not anywhere near as hard as that. Only because the hills are only in the middle part, not all the way through. It is a tough ride but not anything major, it is enough to give you some work.
