Track Tyres 20mm or 23mm

Postby mikesbytes » Fri Feb 15, 2008 11:42 am

At what point is it better to go for 20mm tyres on a track bike over 23mm

If the R-1 rule is broken, what happens to N+1?

When rolling resistance is more important than compliance?

In application - an indoor timber velodrome with a super-smooth surface allows you to run a skinnier, harder tyre that would be too much of a handfull on a rougher, bumpier outdoor track where you'd want the additional bag of a 23mm tyre.

Or you could go for singles...

I'll be doing most of my training on a concrete track and most of my racing on a wooden track

I'm thinking 20mm on the front and 23mm on the rear.

Bloke I know runs 140psi on concrete and 160psi on wood. Don't think I'll go that hard myself.

that high with clinchers on a track is not good, makes it easier to roll the bead off the rim as I found out first hand. At 100kg I was using 145psi, recommended that I drop that down to 130psi max. If you need to run higher pressures use tubulars.

20mm will be fine on both Dunc Gray II and Tempe.
23mm is what you might prefer on bumpier tracks such as Muswellbrook, Queanbeyan etc.

I use 20C Conti's on the Guerciotti at DG II, Illawarra and Goulburn.

Thanks Guys,

I've never ran more than 130psi, can't see myself ever going to 160psi, not even at Dunc Gray.

What is the surface like at Lidcome ?

Is there any benefit to riding the wider tyre on the front? I ride on an outdoor track and just realised last night that the second-hand track bike I have has 21mm on the rear and 23mm on the front. :?

This old thread has been dug out

Unlike my statement in 2008, I've been using 20mm on the front and 23mm on the rear. I use 140psi on concrete and 160psi on wood.

Any thoughts on riding the 23 at the front and the 20 on the rear?

20mm gives better aero on the front

Hmm. Thanks. Thought the 20 may have been put on the front for better control ...
Will swap them around to see if it makes any difference.
