Good on you mate, good effort for being in support! :D

Ill be riding in the event and am looking forward to it.

Got a call from the guides yesterday and got told all up over the two the days, the route will total 237km and we are going via Ferndale on day 1. I suspect we may head back via Woodford on the second day, but that is just my guess, the guides wouldnt say any more about the route.

Bring it on!

Hey guys,
I'm riding with a group of 6 of us. My wife, her sister, husband and daughter and another friend. Looking forward to it. A couple of us are riding from Fernvale out to the campsite and back tomorrow for a look and training ride.

Cheers

SCA has a Toowoomba based team headed up by Rob Neilsen that will be riding in modified SCA jerseys. Give the 15 of them a shout out as you see them!

Hi, as Womble says - there are about 15 of us wearing the Safe Cycling jerseys on day 2 - I have raised about $3300 to date for a cause really close to my heart. send me a private message - will be nice to meet a few faces at the camp.

Me too, keen as.

Anyone done a recon on the route to Somerset? I am guessing Saturday will be 'harder' than Sunday, in that there will be more climbing to the campsite. But the downhills on the way back will be nice

Well if Oxford's number of riders in the OP is correct at 2,500, thats $6,250,000 straight up if everyone raised just the minimum, but as you can see by the leaderboard on the conquercancer website, some champion has raised over $50k herself with another three individuals over $25k. Supreme efforts by these people.

Apparently numbers are down, I was just at a friends place (who is the chief sweep) and numbers are down to around 1500 it would seem due to a 'few' people withdrawing. Still puts it at $3.75M though. Route is a bit of a Cook's tour to get away from Brisbane.

That's a great effort. The ms ride raised half a mill. What did surprise me was that the Bris gc ride only raised a tiny amount (less than 20k?) for their charity from the largest mass participation ride in QLD. Say What!??

What do you know of the route?

I have just seen the cheer points flyer and can see it basically goes via ipswich and pine mountain into Fernvale and up on the Saturday and back the same way on the sunday...

Is there any more info you can share oxford?

We raised 4.7 million WOW, 1375 (approx) riders, covering 236 km.
Apart from the fact that the ride was for cancer research I felt proud to be a part of it, organisation was fantastic, only one off that I know of, Sunday weather was a bit testing in stages.
If you were thinking of it this year, but did'nt, do it next year. Cancer must be defeated.
Hats off to the organisers :D :D :D :D

I posted the idea this year , but it was on the back of cyclones & floods , understandably why more did'nt participate, each individual has to raise $2500.00 to be able to ride. Teams can fundraise together but funds cannot be transferred between members. May be different next year when they get their responses returned. If BNA had a team I would be in,riding on your own for this distance is tough.

I was a rider in the event (rider 0829) and thought the organisation of it was truly outstanding. The marshalling, directions and overall atmosphere amazing. The band for Saturday night entertainment (a covers band) called the Magic carpets were pretty good too. The ride course was quite do-able but there were lots of riders complaining, who in all fairness probably weren't equipped physically for the ride itself. That really doesn't matter that much - the "idea" behind the ride was to raise money for Cancer, meet some new people and have fun - which we did times 10.

I would love to be part of the BNA forums team next year.

Here is my Garmin reports of the ride:

Day 1:
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/108136874

Day 2:
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/108136844

The Day 1 map is slightly inaccurate (1) it went to sleep during the opening ceremony and I only realised it was off a couple minutes into the ride (at that time I was trying not to run into anyone) (2) I didn't reset it properly after day 1 and only reset it Sunday morning before starting the ride for day 2 so the ride time is wrong for completion of day 1. The distance might be 2 kms too short due to the power off error.

How hilly was it? I see there were a lot of elevation changes. One of the guys at my work did it. He is not a regular rider who is overweight and was riding an old mountain bike. He said he didn't stop at all but there were lots of people walking up hills. He thought it was horrific. So horrific that he is considering not doing it next year due to the hills.

It would be a shame if they lost a lot of those occasional cyclists. He felt that they were the target audience so that might bite them.

Hi,

I also rode the ride and while the route was hilly, it was exactly what I was expecting. My garmin stats are below. Day two the heart rate max i think was affected slightly by a bit of jersey flapping on a descent while the elevation profile went a bit haywire then stopped working until my lunch stop due to the rain I think...

Day 1
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/108114760

Day 2
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/108114736

Thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and gained a great deal out of it. As I said the route was hilly but I expected it so I enjoyed it (ok so slightly swayed from those thoughts on day 2 just coming into Fernvale or Ferndale into a strong headwind on the roughest course chip road imaginable)
