NSW struggles to get into gear as bicycle usage lags behind

Motorists hate cyclists and cyclists hate the motorists and the pedestrians hate the bikers and everybody hates the trucks.

I'm guessing life is different in the Territory. Sydney has bike hostile traffic. Maybe for kids to get around, bikes are the best option i.e. no public transport, long distances, no pedophiles.

Just speculating.

Helmets are just as mandatory according to this:

thanks for the link. the way I read page two top left corner is that helmets for adults are only required when riding on the road or bicycle lane part of a road, so not required when riding on a foot path. maybe this is a partial explanation for higher participation rates?
There could also be a small difference between 'it's the rules' and 'it's tolerated'
I'm guessing the latter.. :D

Also, after looking some statistics on this site ;
http://www.roadsafety.nt.gov.au/transpo ... ndex.shtml

You wil see that so far this year, there has been no bicycle fatality at al, none.
And last year, also none, from the 50 people that have died not one of them was a cyclist.
That might also help to contribute to the people willing to ride a bike... ... :D
The dutch have one word to describe the aussie MHL, this word is ;
SCHIJNVEILIGHEID !!

participation rate might be skewed by the population size <240,000 for the whole territory. That's less than some of our individual local council areas in Sydney, Blacktown 299,000 in 2009.
