For Sale: Cheap Speedplay Grease Gun - 10 cents!!

Postby Dr_Mutley » Tue Sep 20, 2011 1:46 pm

To save speedplay users a few bob, here's what I use to inject grease into my speedplay pedals... A simple 3 ml syringe.
Available at a chemist near u....

Steps:
1) remove screw in grease injection port in side of pedal body
2) put desired lubricant in syringe
3) inject lubricant until old lubricant is expelled from crank side of pedal body
4) wipe off old lubricant and replace injection port screw

Refer to pics & video below....

Hopefully this works!

Forgive the quality as I was injecting the grease one handed while holding the iPhone with the other! I guess however, it does demonstrate how easy the process is if I can do it one handed, and proves that u don't need a $40 speedplay grease gun to do the job!

Hope that saves a few quid ;-)

Edit:
If anyone has trouble finding a suitable syringe at the chemist or local doctors surgery, drop me a PM and I'll send u some...

we have syringes here at work that have a threaded nozzle. perfect for AVID brakes. might be lucky here too ??

Are they medical syringes or syringes made for avid brakes? The medical threaded syringes (clearlink system) are no good as they don't have enough tip to get into the port...

But any syringe with 4 or 5 mm of nozzle, which is around 3mm in diameter should work fine...

Just remember the smaller the diameter of the actual plunger of the syringe produces more pressure to squirt to grease in than a syringe with a larger diameter plunger... Hence a 3ml syringe is perfect, but a 5 or 10ml syringe will still probably work ok...

The glowing green goo in the syringe reminds me of this:

Does the pedal twitch and go nuts after you inject the re-agent?

Nope but if I sniff the green goo too long I go nuts! ;-)

Avoid the Luer-lok syringes - just ask for standard taper syringes.

Yeah they're no good. The luer-loks were what i was referring to as part of the clear link system... No good as not pointy enough...

Tried this today with a 10 ml syringe that I had available and had trouble getting the grease to come out the back of the pedal as in the video. Seemed that I was getting enough pressure out of the syringe though as the dust cap kept trying to lift off and grease oozed out from behind it. Maybe I'll try again with a 3 ml syringe and see how I go, although the one pedal that was spinning freely and sounding very dry now won't spin freely due to the new grease and has no play or noise so I guess mission successfull. Would like to see the old 'dirty' grease flushed out though...
I used Castrol Marine Grease too, maybe it's a bit thick?

It's a trade off... The higher viscosity of the grease, the harder to force it in, and the more resistance it will add to the pedal body turning... It will add better protection to the bearings and repel more water & grime.... U will prob need a smaller diameter syringe, and tap on the dust stop to enable u to force the old grease out the other side...

Personally I use a thinner, low viscosity grease do there is less resistance to the pedal body turning. The trade off here is I lubricate them much more frequently....

Good tip, I use a bigger syringe for my general greasing duties, it cost about 50c though. It's about 60mL, packed with Castrol marine grease and great for repacking bearings.

If your grease is too "thick" leave it in the sun for a while before using it.

That was my next question. What grease do people use?

I use Castol high tempterature bearing grease. Used this stuff for years in car wheel bearings amongst other things

cheers

Better "grease life" for the bearings??

Recommended Bike Grease?

Grease - the lubricant not the movie :)
