There are a number of trainers available off flebay. Here's a thread about the one I bought recently. It cost me $100 delivered and it's worked a charm - even the crappy resistance gadget works. You can get cheaper. The cheapest I've see was $20 and I should imagine that the price mirrors the quality, but if it's all you can afford ...
No, I'm not selling you mine

Hi Ginger, there are some secondhand bike shops around, one in Sydney and one in Canberra. Where do you live? Update your profile.
If the R-1 rule is broken, what happens to N+1?

I have a basic trainer I bought from Big W for $100 and it does the job for me. It is nothing flash but I have had no problems with it. I think KMart sells them as well.
Alternatively you could try www.freecycle.org and look up the groups for the Sydney area and post a message on there. You never know someone may have one gathering dust in their home. Freecycle does not cost and basically involves people passing on goods they no longer need, thus reducing landfill.
Hope this helps,
Karen.

Sorry, Big W is a variety type store. There is a link below to their locations, I have a feeling most would be too far from you since you dont know Sydney too well as yet. There is also a link to Kmart and also the ones sold on ebay. I am not sure who else sells them around this price. Hope this helps.

I was just thinking of Mick! He would be a good one to call because he does have secondhand bikes from time to time and could help you with the trainer as well. I am not sure of the range of secondhand bikes he sells but if you call him he would be more than happy to help. He is a lovely guy who provides great customer service. Well worth a look.
