ALDI bike sale (starting on 05/10/2011 Wednesday)

Hi there,

New poster and new rider.
Have been looking at a few Flat Bar Road Bikes and was basically set on the Norco VFR 2 2010 (approx $600).
However looking at this Aldi bike I'm thinking this might suit me perfectly.

I was in our local Aldi last night and they had probably 10-15 of these stacked up but I didn't give it more then a quick glance.

Does anyone know what size it is or wether it comes in varied sizes?
I've sized myself up on my friends bike and believe I need a L (20/21 inch bike), if someone can confirm the size of this I'll be down there in the morning.

my jeans are a size ''32' waist, which equates to 82cm which was a small according to the size chart.
however it feels rather constricted, and when i measured my waist with a tape meter it was more along the lines of 87cm (medium)

Well you should have gotten the Medium and they should snug to stop chaffing.

For anyone interested aldi at underwood had a few bikes left as well as a pile of gloves, socks, tool kit, pumps and lights most other clothes were gone though

Had a look, standard LED lights were I guess cheap but I dunno.

Also had a look at the 1200 Lumens LED for $29 and was thinking if I seriously needed this type of illumination then this would probably through light out but not be comparable with a brand name unit. Should I dish out $29 just to test... I decided no. Right now no real need.

Otherwise I looked at the gloves and rainjackets in details and my personal impression is that they will do the job but don't have the same quality as brand name wear. That's not to say that the stitching isn't ok rather the padding, cut and fit of the gloves for example doesn't compare to my gloves for example. But it depends how you use the gear - if it is for every so often, or even for using well but accepting a different performance than other gear then thats fine (eg. if the jackets don't release moisture well as suggested).

120 lumens not 1200. If it were 1200 I'd have bought 5

yeah 1200 lumen lights for $29 would have had me out of hospital with an IV line trailing behind me.

the Aldi gear generally I've found is actually mostly quite good quality. I have some of their moto gear and the gloves, pants, rain gear and under layers are very high quality, rivaling Dri-Rider in terms of cut, and construction.

I do think you need to be judicious though in what you buy and what you use it for to ensure your own satisfaction.

Popped into N Strathfield yesterday, not too much stuff left. Picked up some S/M leg warmers. Def on the thin side, even compared to my current Anaconda/Fluid ones (which are going well). Also, a touch on the largish size (I'm 170cm) but OK. Gloves looked cheapie for sure. I would also recommend Fluid long finger gloves (when on sale) - had a pair for 3 winters, can't argue with that.

Also picked up the Hex/torx key set for 20 bucks. Like many of the tools I have from aldi, they are pretty good. Good range of sizes from 2 to 10mm(good for pedals). Been hankering for a half decent set with a handle. Been managing with your std "L" shaped ones - do yourselves a favour get these - perfect for bike maintenance.

Checked out my local Aldi (Corio which is a Northern Suburb of Geelong) today just for a look at what was there.
Plenty of bikes, MTB, flat bar and folding, as well as heaps of clothing in most color/size variations. Jackets, gloves, tops, shorts, underwear etc. were all there.
Ended up getting the tool kit... and also seen the hex/torx set in a separate aisle which made it into the trolley.

picked up some arm and leg warmers. They're OK for the price. I dont expect em to last long though. I can see them getting loose and floppy real quick. And the sizes are huge. I'm 190 cm and the s/m were just the right fit.

Also got some gloves . Probably wont last long either but they've got plenty of padding and i haven't had a pair of $30 - $40 gloves that last that long either. So for $8 these'll do the trick. Looked at the rain coats but I reckon you'd be wetter on the inside after 5 minutes.

Got a couple of the lights for my wife and daughters bikes. One of the brackets broke putting it on so I might take that one back. Keen to check out the torque sets.

Can anyone comment on the quality of the toolkit? Does the chainwhip fit 3/32" and 1/8" sprockets?

From a quick inspection the tools looked fairly basic, but appeared to cover the essentials...

I got one last year. For 30 clams its pretty good. just don't expect top quality but its probably not the worst either. good for basic stuff

I picked up the 30 dollar 120 lumen light today after seeing the charger and battery seemed to be identical to my MagicShines... good deal right? New battery and Australian charger for 30 bucks?

The connectors are reversed from the bloody Magicshine stuff... male battery lead, female charger, while the MagicShines are male charger and female lead. GAH.

It's like Bunnings all over again...........

Appears to be 1/2" which would be consistet with the size of the sockets and the photo of it being used on car wheel nuts. It is unlikely to have low enough torque setting to be useful on a bike, where you probably want a 1/4"

Bought the gloves and socks, both are great for the money. Think I will go and try to buy a few more pairs of gloves, as I tend to kill gloves quickly. I have had the socks before, so made sure I got there on time to grab them.

Small note, the socks seem to be made in two lengths. If you like your socks long (as I do) you just need to look through the bin. They aren't marked on the packet, you just need to compare the lengths. Socks are very very comfy, hopefully the elastic doesn't crap itself.

Aldi is 1 size fits all, and thats likely to be a medium. I'd also refer to the aldi thread here where the final result was a failed fork, and that the bike is unlikely to have been assembled properly, and bear in mind that either you, or a department store employee is doing final assembly.
