We need some good information about what type of rider you are. Otherwise we can suggest a whole bunch of things that won't help!

Here's what I'd suggest... take what you want:
- get a good pair of bibknick shorts, with a decent pad
- use chamois creme for long rides. apply liberally to the pad
- Make sure you have a proper bike fit, saddle height is important for sit bone comfort
- if you're a new rider, give yourself some time to get accustomed to the saddle. it'll take a while for your sit bones to get used to riding
- avoid riding in the rain
- take your knicks off straight after riding
- shave / exfoliate "that area" to keep ingrown hairs at bay
- change your saddle - often the new saddles with the perineum channel will place more pressure on your sit bones. everyone's bum is different so go with a saddle you find comfortable.
- don't ride if you've already got saddle sores. even tour professionals will pull out if they're injured down there.

I think that's about it for now - hopefully that helps!

Thanks macloccio for your good advise, think I need to take all your points on board.
you are right my saddle needs probably changing, it is a lot slimmer than my previous one and appears that is when it all started.

Might not be the saddle but the saddle hight.

The best saddles I have had in terms of preventing saddle sores are the slimmer ones, same with bike shorts. The best shorts I have used have a slimmer but better designed chamois.

So old school :) :) Don't use metho I know of a couple of riders who have had to have operations due to using it.However there are some who have been doing it for years with no hassles Foo is obviously one :) I burst them with a sterile needle and apply a high zinc content nappy cream this works great. Keep applying the cream not just on the bike til they are gone. Agree with get the nicks off straight away and only wear them ONCE. I hate saddle sores and normally catch them before they are an issue.

I use a chamois/chafing cream on the ride, and when I get out the shower, a bit of betadine/iodine solution on the area to prevent any sores from brewing - the trouble is the bacteria getting into tears in the skin and hair follicles that causes a lot of issues, so the less bacteria + less rubbing = less sores.
