2002 Giant Rincon

Gday good people

I have a 2002 rincon in need of some new cranks etc it is a 7 speed and i believe you cannot get them any more.
If i go to a 8 or 9 speed do i need to change the back wheel?

would i be better off buying a new mtb? don't want to if i don't have to.

There's plenty vintage MTB stuff on ebay's US site.

My old 2003 Rincon is 8 speed and it had the same cranks as your 2002 Rincon. There are local shops around that still sell plenty of 7 speed gear.

If you do change to 8 or 9 speed, you will need to change your shifters too and they may also include the brake levers?? Not 100% sure about the derailleur.

Not much wrong with the Rincon frame. Your wheels though will have a screw on freewheel rather than the more modern cassette and freehub. So an upgrade to 9spd or 10spd will require new wheels and groupset. This'd require an investment over $400...assuming a Deore group and wheels but it would bring the bike up to modern equivalent spec of a $1,200 plus retail bike. If just the crankset is knackered I'd consider just replacing that either with an Shimano Alivio (which uses a tapered BB - that you likely already have) or a Deore (uses a Hollowtech BB). Advantage of the latter is replaceable chainwheels and light weight. it has the spline and cassette but 7 speed. I have since found a couple of cranksets on ebay that will do the job. I have stripped teeth on the current chainrings so she skips under load. Found an Alvio in the US which will fit.

I upgraded my crankset to Alivio but it wasn't straight forward as the crank offset was different. I then had to change the bottom bracket to get the chain line back to 48-50mm, plus the BB mount front derailleur was also an issue from memory. Was still worth doing as the the crankset was far better.

Just double check your chain line is correct.
