Deciding on MTB

Postby igino » Fri Oct 28, 2011 11:19 pm

Hello,

Trying to decide on my "first" MTB. It has been a while since I ride. I want to use it on the reserve and also occasional commuting but don't really want to break the budget (800 max at the moment....have increased the budget several times)

At the moment, I have cut it to two options
1st option: buying it online
Focus Black Raider 4.0 - good bike components etc. Total cost around $818

Heard the brand before but haven't found a lot of reviews on it. Anybody has any experience with the weight especially?
Assembling the bike is not a concern, but warranty might be...

2nd option: from LBS, total cost ~ $700
The decision falls to Montari 26.3, got all the bits and pieces offered from LBS, cage bottle, free 1st service, pump etc..

What do you all think? or should I be looking another model with much better value? Unbiased advise here is much2 appreciated as I am really confused.

I'm thinking to make the decision this coming weekend...so I can start riding!

Thanks. :D

There are a few better specced bikes - try the Azzurri Magma MTB from CE for $799.

Out of the two choices, go for the Focus. They are a well-regarded Euro brand. The cranks are better, the shifters and derailleurs are much better and may even be 10-speed. Forks on both are bit meh, brakes are OK.

The key thing is to make sure the sizing is right. If the sizing is wrong, you won;t enjoy riding.

Thanks for the replies guys!... darn, I just put a 10% deposit on the montari about a few hours agoo.. :( - They are out of stock atm and hoping to get it by next weekend. Would they upset if I cancel? would I normally get my deposit back? :?

Azurri looks good too (but will bump up the budget again after adding the delivery...)

Get the Montari and ride it till you kill it...given your skills, experience and current needs then its specs suit you just as well as the bling on the other bikes. As parts die...trade up to better bling.
Ours is not to reason why...merely to point and giggle

Thanks for all the comments! A good encouragement to ride often so I can upgrade my bike...:)

I'll stick with Montari for now then ...see if I still like the sport after 12 years absent.
