Giant triple to single speed

Hey guys,

Just brought a mates 3 year old gaint for something to learn about bikes on. Was thinking about making it a single speed but it has a triple on the front and the largest is a 52 ring. Would I have to replace this or could I get something to fit on the back? I was just going to use a conversion kit on the back but I'm not sure weather this would work.

I'll post photos later and see what u guys think.

Can't see it being a huge problem unless you're talking swaged rings. Add the kit for the rear hub and put your chainring of choice onto the middle position, you will need to get singlespeed specific chainring bolts or a bunch of washers to pack out the existing units.

As to calculating ratios for your situation, try THIS, courtesy of Sheldon Brown. It'll give you an idea of the best chainring size for your situation.

Ta. Have started pull it apart. But since I couldn't get the hoods off I have a long way.

Hoods? As in brake levers? What type?

Was going to start pulling it apart. Looked at the Bar tape and saw that the hood covers need to come off first? tips?

Managered to get the bar tape off. The Brake leaver are off. All the cables are gone. I suppose i now have to learn how to brake a chain and start around that area.
