2012 Audax Alpine Classic

Postby blc » Tue Nov 08, 2011 6:53 am

Should have mentioned in the op - I'm in for the 200 this year. Would've liked to do the 250 but earned a DNF on the Fitzs Epic.

Hannos, I don't know what the situation is like in Bright itself atm, but looking of town for accommodation might work. My crew usually stay at the hotel/motel in Harrietville. 10 min drive to/from rhe start but it's a great spot.

Same. except I re-book my accomodation every year in January as I leave. ( 3rd time for the 250. 13 x 200's and 130 in 2006)

Myself and the wife are off for our 3rd crack and hopefully have 1 or 2 riding buddies who we have conned into going as well. Can't wait. We spend a week there, have a house in Bright this year but have been in Porepunkah the previous 2 years which is also great.

I have put a thread in the Training section, interested to see what everyone does to prepare, hope some of you are happy to share.

Cool. I can ride to the start of the 250.

Riding home might be problematic though ;)

No, I've done a few. That's a whole lot of suffering up Mt Buffalo over the years, although it's probably better that I don't think about it. Never been fast but manage to finish, except too hot for me though in 2006 (40+).

Looking forward to this year. Training is going well, done more kms than ever before and I've dropped some kgs this year and am the lightest i've been so it should help. (Pity that i'm just 17 years older than when I first started back in 95. )

My training varies every year.Usually it's just the bare minimum, always train around the Dandenongs where I live, sometimes do Mt Donna Buang a few times, ride to work etc. I try and get in a few 100km+ hilly rides always. at least 5-6 hours in the saddle on hills is good. That seems to get me through.

The alpine 200 is only 130kms of riding anyway!

I could not claim my climb of Buffalo as riding last year either, more like crawling, it was pathetic, was doing about 9km/hr. So take another 20km off!

I'm with ya Jules. Funny how it still feels like 200km, even with all that decending. Even funnier was how I swore halfway up Buffalo I would never do it again if I just gritted it out and finished. Then next day I'm already rethinking my training etc for next years assault. We must be mad.

I'm doing the ACE 250, at a comfortable pace. I would have been happy to have achieved 12kph up Buffalo at the end of the 200 this year!

There's a bunch of us going again from Dulwich HIll Bicycle Club. Looking forward to it.

Training starts in earnest ... about now!

Pity about the 4AM start. You're going to have to cart all those lights up all those hills. :x

If you're worried about a cup full of water in terms of weight being the difference then you shouldn't be doing ACE250.

If I have completed my immigration back to the mainland and have passed all the visa requirements I am going to be spoilt for choice when it comes to audax events in Victoria.

It's important that it's not too easy. :D

I am wondering where I am going to take all the extras I need though. I'm thinking I might try and fit a spare tyre in there somewhere. Might have to get a bigger under seat bag thingy. My bike's not very big though, so there isn't a whole lot of real estate at the back of the bike. Last thing I want is 249 km of chafing from a too-big bag.
