2010 Haro Flightline 3 - noob bike?

Hey guys,

Able to pick one up off a mates brother for $600 brand new - good deal?

I'm completely new to the MTB scene, haven't been on a bike for a few years, will mainly use for the streets, easy trails, possibly harder trails

I'm 5'11 and weigh 100kg - would this bike support me? I'm happy to also spend up to $800 - if you guys have any other bikes in mind?

Should i bite the bullet and purchase it?

For your price I would suggest looking for a Malvern Star XCS5.0 if you can find a 2011 one. Most places had them for $699 which is a bargain for the spec.
$600 for the Haro seems a rip-off by comparison.

BTW Im 95kg and have owned an XCS5.0 for 5 months and love it!

im guessing that's a good deal, just not sure about the colour...are they coloured stickers on a black frame?

So the fork on this is better than the haro? what are the other things that make this bike superior? (sorry don't know much !)

Any other bikes you can recommend?

The forks on both bikes are entry level specs. Neither one excels the other.

However, the MS does have a better specced driveline with a full Deore group which gives you better shifters, better crankset and front derailleur. And 9 spd rather than 8 speed. And the wheels are much better too. Brakes are about the same.

However, the Haro larger front chainring ratios are better for the sort of use you quote...although that's no biggie. You can get a complete Deore crankset with those bigger rings for about $90 (replacement chain rings will cost much more!!).

Based on specs alone...I'd look at the MS.

If there are any bikes you can actually take for a test ride then I would definitely do that. I'd recommend doing rounds at the local bike shops, get loaded up on as much info as you can and if they let you test ride, try anything that interests you.

Having said that, if you enjoy the sport then eventually you will get a more purpose-built bike suited to the type of riding you end up doing most. This means that as long as the bike is durable and the right frame size for you, it'll serve you well for a number of years. Can't believe how good bikes have become either, 5 years ago $600 wouldn't have got you anything anywhere near as good.

Another thing; If you ever leave your bike in a public place or a place that's easily accessible, then make sure it's secure. Bikes get stolen like crazy

The Malvern Star is a semi-gloss finish, decals appear to be painted on under clear coat. Trust me they look better in real life. Apart from the full Deore groupset, the wheels and tyres are pretty good for the price point and the weight is also good. Stock my XCS weighed 13.8kg (large) my mates medium Specialized Hardrock disc weighs in at 16.9kg.
Great suggestion to go out and give some different bikes a try... hope Ive given you some good suggestions!
