BNA Crowd Funding Promotion

Postby AUbicycles » Mon Nov 28, 2011 11:15 am

Dear Forum Members,
This thread is for information and questions surrounding the BNA crowd funding promotion.

In Brief
BNA is relaunching - and to cover the costs I have decided to crowd-fund.

Over the years, lots of members ask how they can support, some suggesting subscriptions. This reflects a site and forum that is a good community with valuable content. I am not convinced that subscription works as I prefer not to lock away content (ie. for paid members only) instead am promoting a free information resource. Others have suggested a one off 'donation' and typically advertising revenue covers fixed costs so there hasn't been a reason or challenge, until now. The relaunch of BNA and as such an opportunity for members to show support and help cover the costs.

Support BNA here>

In detail
The forum is essential the 'non-commercial' part of BNA and will stay that way. There will be some cosmetic updates to the forum though in essence it continues. The relauch covers primarly the main BNA site with News and Articles and the best Directory of Australian Cycling. It is getting a completely new look and feel and will be bigger, better and faster.

Competition
To make the promotion more exciting, I have contacted local (Aus(NZ) retailers and importers to support the the BNA crowd funding promotion with prizes. For every person or business who supports in the BNA crowd funding with a contribution over $5, there is a chance to win one of 22 prizes with a retail value of over $1800.

22 Prizes worth over $1800

• Custom Fixie valued at $449 from Cell Bikes
• 10 x $40 Gift Vouchers from Cycling Express
• 2 Helmets from the Nutcase Gen2 Street Collection
• 4 x Arundel Packs valued at $55.85 each from Bike Stable
• 2 x $100 Gift Vouchers from Ground Effect
• MiniDV camera valued at $135
• Pro-Lite Como Training Wheels valued at $149
• Peak Fuel pack from AvantiPlus valued at $113.85

Questions
If there are any questions, I am happy to answer here.

To kick off, while the forum is run as a non-commercial area, it is backed by Bicycles Network Australia which is a registered business so financial contributions are not a 'charitable donation' however I personally guarantee that 100% of contributions with be used to cover costs of the relaunch. Should contributions exceed relaunch costs, the contributions will be used for further development ie. are used directly for the site.

I was about to post a thread on this...wholly support this and the sponsors' gifts are a nice incentive.

Main question, there are only two payment options - Paypal and Bank Deposit. I don't use Paypal but use my VISA for Paypal-related transactions. Is it the same or do I need to have a Paypal account to transact? If yes, I'd prefer bank deposit. I haven't clicked submit yet just in case the payment system isn't set up to what I think it would be set up. Presumably your bank account details will be made available after I click submit?

In my mind, how the prize is chosen is trivial. What's important to me is the contribution to an excellent site, with or without prizes.

PS. I have no doubt that Chris will ensure the prizes are handed out without bias.

Thanks for the quick feedback - let me answer the questions.

Payment
With paypal I understand that you can still pay with creditcard however a bank deposit may be the easier option in this case.
I prefer the bank deposit, though it takes a little longer to organise. Paypal is quicker and can be more convenient, though they do take a small cut.
On Bank deposit - a reminder that I have managed 2 50+ runs of jerseys and sold lots of BNA caps - these are 'cash in advance' and there have been no disgruntled buyers.

Choosing Winners
I can confirm that winners will be chosen by a computer - random number generation so it is completely left to chance.
One person did read the T&C.

Given your preference, any chance of changing my commitment from PayPal payment to Bank Deposit?

I'd change my choice from Paypal to bank deposit too. I am not sure what I was thinking as I am quite aware PayPal take a commission.

Careful, this thread could turn into a PayPal bashing thread. I gather there's some serious resentment of the fee hikes associated with eBay/PayPal transactions these days.

I'd be happy to donate a prize:
1 x 3-month RST Sport custom training plan value $180.

Great idea. I love the crowd-funding concept.

I agree with others I thought at first it was only PayPal, until I saw the drop down menu and there was a DD option (which I chose to minimise your fees).

I only donated a small amount as I am pretty broke atm and out of work. However advice from fellow members through this forum has saved me $$$ so I thought I would at lease make a small contribution.

Thanks for the feedback on the pull-down.
I swapped it around so bank deposit is first.
Paypal takes 30 cents (fixed) plus up to 2.4%

On the 'thank you' list, for interest the amounts will not be listed. This site welcomes students... (been there and done that) so I know how tight cash can be. It also welcomes mining magnates… and cycling is the new golf…

I demand a wikipedia style appeal for funds (if you don't know what I mean, visit wikipedia). I want to see the bespectacled mod guy at the top of every banner appealing for funds, Jimmy Wales style. Get to it, Christopher.

BTW, the new site designs I've seen are great, but the most important thing is that there will be more opportunity for contributions from everyone's favourite BNA writer. I'll leave you to speculate who that is.

Hello. All submissions to date have been processed...

For bank deposit, a reply email with details in an attached PDF.
For paypal, have sent a 'payment request' from paypal to the email address provided.
If you check your spam boxes and there is nothing, can I please ask you to send again.

Was waiting for the wikipedia comparison... If I need to put a photo of me having a good old cry up the top.. I will do it, though have been intending to encourage members to support rather than spit the coffee or wine all over the screens.
