Dicta Freewheels

Postby hartleymartin » Sat Nov 26, 2011 2:12 pm

Any comment on the quality of Dicta freewheels? I'm looking at having a single-speed roadster 44/18 to use as a college beater to/from station and shops from the college campus, no real hills to speak of here in Old Toongabbie.

mate, dictas are cheap, but they do the job and quite solid. I've been on my 17t freewheel commuting to and from work for 6 months now and still no probs. I do various commutes from bowen hills to cbd going through tracks, paths, roads hills and most recently to morningside and back for a 25km trip with no issues.

I don't see the need for an expensive brand freewheel but i haven't had the trouble with mine yet so touch wood. lol

Thanks for the feedback. Looks like I'm just going to run with the freewheel. The bicycle won't be doing lots of miles, but mostly short trips.

Why not go fixed then?
Sheldon would approve..., cleaner, simpler and no crunchy bearings.

Thought about going fixed, but I have the freewheel in my garage and the bicycle is going to have north road bars rather than drops.

You ask about the quality of something you already have at hand? Me thinks you're actually just procastinating about the build, by asking for opinions on here :D

And besides - when does the type of handlebars alter the definition of a fixed wheeled bicycle? Sounds like you're being a closet hipster, Marty.

I had one at hand. I got it cheap in a bundle of other parts NOS. I was wondering whether or not it was worth using or if I should purchase a better one.

I've used Dicta's on three bikes, no real probs. Just take a little time to work some grease into the pawls and they're fine. Have used Shimano as well, which are a step above in quality, but also in price. If you've got it, rock it.

I do begin to question the definition of a "beater" if the perfectly functional parts already at hand are having their quality questioned.

Maybe a true beater is a bike built or repaired and given away to someone else. No guarantee expressed or implied. :D
