Hobart's top 10 climbs

Challenge: ride this climb entirely over your heart rate anaerobic threshold (that is, in your red zone).

Your anaerobic threshold, is 84-90% of your maximum heart rate, not your red zone, Zone 6 94-100% of your heart rate would the red zone and you only last very very short periods, 2-3 seconds in this zone, the red zone. Maybe change to riding in your anaerobic threshold zone..

Depends on who you talk to. I understand anything over anaerobic threshold is usually called the red zone (as you say anything over 84-90%).

Is it possible to ride between 90-100% for a sustained period? I don't reckon I could do it all the way up the Longley-Neika climb but that's the challenge isn't it. Take a look at the Strava results of some of the riders in the Wellington TTT (e.g. . Some of them ride at (I'm guessing a bit here) over 90% max HR for 30 minutes. I don't know how they do it.

Strava pffft i dont look at it, im pretty sure that Campbell will have most of the records around Hobart or nearl and Jai if not.

I've placed the challenge in this post within reach of many here, just don't kill yourself on the descent please, it's not good for my blog stats.

I'm trying to think of some more creative ones for the final 3 climbs...

The young bucks of racing around Hobart beleive the full climb includes the dirt all the way to the top

Also be mindful there is a rotweiler agressive dog near the top which does go after cyclists, Gerald and Scott can attest to that.

It's not in Hobart, but have you heard of Bust me gall Hill on the way out to Orford ?? I rode it a couple of years ago so my memory of it isn't so great, not real long but ramps up a bit if memory serves........??

I also managed Mt Wellington it was a brilliant viewing day too

enjoying this count down. was wondering when the collinvale route would show up. great ride . ive ridden this route 100's of times since its in my backyard. great fun on the descent too. u have to start from the bottom of berriedale road though , just off the bike track, to get the full impact.

As for the dirt track to the top of goats hill. im hoping to be able to get to the top with my new roubaix. It has 9 switch backs i think. previously been able to only get a mountain bike up there. dont know how i'll go

And regards the dog. There is a dog thats sometimes comes after u. wouldnt worry about it too much. Its just after the second bend as you go up old collinsvale road. A few years ago it was worst. At the same property there was a mangy old looking german shepard that had me turn back the first time...till i realised i could out accelerate the thing. And occassionaly you'll get a dog or two from another property, but very rare.

For a circuit. i recommend going on into collinsvale then climbing up to collins cap, then down the dirt road to molesworth, then climbing back up to glenlusk (where old collinsvale road ends)

Gordo, yeah, I decided to just include the old road section of the climb, don't really like the climb from Berriedale, and it would spoil the 'nearly nonexistent' traffic moniker...

Chuck, yep, Bust-me-gall, Break-me-neck, and Black Charlies Opening. Possibly the best named climbs in the country. Maybe one day I'll do a 'climbs-further-afield' blog post, and this triplet would qualify. But the research and photography for further afield climbs is a little more demanding, time-wise (sponsorship anyone? )

^^wouldnt say bonnet was one of my fav climbs. but i love the descent - both sides. its good being able to faster than cars at times. the ride to kingston is great however...and would be even better with decent cycling facilities.

I've only ever done the complete climb as described once, with regrouping pauses. It hurt. Have to do it again now that I've gone and promoted it... Stupid idea, this whole blog series!
