Cadel - Manly to Palm Beach ride

Postby JV911 » Fri Dec 09, 2011 10:12 am

Tour de France champ leads the pack from Manly to Palm Beach

He fought off the toughest of competitors to win the world’s most gruelling bike race earlier this year but the pace will be a little more enjoyable when Cadel Evans takes part in his very own Tour De Manly on Sunday.

The champion cyclist will lead a leisurely ride from Manly to Palm Beach on behalf of global accounting firm Ernst & Young.

While the company declined to offer further details on the event earlier today, a spokeswoman said the ride was being held exclusively for its staff and clients...YEA RIGHT!

She said members of the public were not permitted to join the group, which would also feature track cyclist Shane Kelly.

Despite not being able to take part, Dee Why Bike Hub owner Larry Dwyer is still hoping the Tour De France winner will cycle past his shop on Pittwater Rd.

The cycling nut said he was a huge fan of Evans and believes the ride will be a ``walk in the park’’ for his idol. He’s also issued a friendly warning about the Newport hill.

``If you want to see him get his heart rate up it will be there,’’ he said.

Manly Warringah Cycling Club committee member Emma Wood said her group did the ride up the peninsula every morning.

She said she was ecstatic Evans would now do the same trip.

``We are so proud because we have such a beautiful scenic ride on the northern beaches.’‘

Evans will begin the trek up the peninsula at 8am.

Watch as a group magically appears behind them and swells to 245-odd riders...all in non-E&Y kits. Just trailing behind at the same pace, as if by magic, as Cadel, instead of passing at twice the speed. I should trundle out to the main road to watch them go by, its only a couple of km from my place. I figure about an 8am start at Manly will have them passing Dee Why LBS about 8:45-9:00am unless they turn it on. Where's that cowbell?

Major lols.

What will they do, stop people from riding on a public road?

"This is not a public ride, You cannot join in. Go away."

The best response to this is:
A: "Damn straight it's not a pubic ride. Who said you could ride with me?"
B: "We're the guard of honur, and we're here to protect you. That bike pump near my bidon is actually an automatic weapon."
C: "Oh, I thought it was a public road. Sorry, did I miss a sign or something?"
D: "Cadel who?"

Anyone tag along? Wanted to go watch the group ride past, but had my daughters christening instead...priorities, huh? Saw a mate heading home about 10:30, so I rolled down the window and asked if he'd caught the group. He just grinned back and nodded. Sod.

Obviously Ernst & Young paid top dollars for Cadel's appearance as a perk for its staff and clients . So I think it's most reasonable to respect the private function and stay away. In any case, why bother riding 50-60 riders behind a famous name? There'd be nothing to see and it's never safe to ride in such a hugh bunch. And who enjoys gate crashing an uninvited party?

Unfortunately there was an accident at West Head today, a rider suffered concussion. EMT and I were advising traffic to slow down. When Cadel came thru, we yelled at him and the E&Y guys to slow down

Was that in the MWCC race up there? Renshaw was racing A Grade 8) Thats what my mate was smiling about, not Cadel.

My father was riding in an Audax group with this fellow (a DHCC cyclist). Perhaps a concentration lapse - but he spotted you Mike... you are more famous that Cadel these days!

Was struggling through a 75 km ride and bumped into them as I was descending back down McCarrs Creek. All looked fairly civilised. Any reason why they changed the route and didn't head out to Palmie?
