Trekking bars

I know a couple of forumites have fitted them recently. I always thought they looked like a good idea, but have stumbled across this post from cyclingforums.com (the poster is from the Netherlands). The bloke might be full of it, but would anyone using them like to comment?

They seemed a good idea at first (BUT) they are bad for your shoulders, be carefull.
I had bought them for my wife and during our spring tour she had shoulder pains so we changed them back to streight bar with bar ends, for our fall tour and no more pain.
Shame your not near by I would give them to you FREE. Not worth the postage.

I don't see how, they're the same width as flat bars and are basically a long reach/short reach flat bar with bar ends between.

Unless he set them up vertically or something whacky like that, which I have seen, I guess if you set them up weird you could make them uncomfortable.

I've done 300+ km on them so far, no problems apart from getting used to them the first couple of rides.

Unfortunately, there was no infomation about how he set them up. What's your longest ride? He was talking about touring so I'm guessing some reasonable days stacked one after the other.

Longest in a stretch 50km. Plus 3 of 45 or so and one of 36 off road.

Given the number of touring bikes that use these I can't believe that it's the bars at fault.

They look magic.
I ride a Trek MTB with a flat bar that has extensions on each end like bull horns and they are all sharp edges and angles but these things look quite elegant.
Are they suitable for a MTB?

Absolutely!

Easy to install too.

You take off your flat bars from the stem (after removing grips, levers and shifters), put on trekking bars, add grips, shifters levers on the flat part close to you, and away you go!

Oh and you want the BBB Multifoam grips too, they're full length foam grips that go right around the curve of the bars.

Drop bars my man are the sensible choice **blows raspberries**

Seriously, I like the concept of the trekking bars and I started this thread because I was wee bit upset to see them under a cloud ... even if it was by just one user.
