Yes, I ride a road bike too, do a few Audax distance events. And the roadie has lights plus mirror fitted.

In my opinion riding while using devices that lessen your hearing sense and increasing distractions is mighty close to negligence. I have only assumed it is an ilegal act, if not, it should be. I am constantly amazed at how many cyclists are quick to blame SMIDSYs ( or whatever they are labelled), however the same cyclists fail to do everything in their power to keep themselves safe. They sherk their own responsibility then blame others for not taking up the slack.

A SMIDSY is someone who actually fails to see a cyclist (or other road user). When using an mp3 player I have never come close to doing this. There is no shirking of any responsibility - my responsibility is to look out for other vehicles and give way where legally required. Listening to an mp3 player does not prevent this.

I agree with KR. It is just common sense not to restrict your senses while cycling. To do so is dangerous and selfish. Let's get our own house in order as first priority, then work on the behaviour and attitudes of non-cyclers.

Some people would claim that "common sense" would say that I should not ever consider riding a bike in traffic at all

Whatever happened to common sense?

Common sense tells me that if your music is so loud that you can't hear your bike's noises you can't hear anything else...and that if you can hear your bike, you can hear whatever else you need to hear.

It also tells me, as others have said, that if you are riding in a group and listening to music, you are not really riding with the other guys, just near them.

I used to ride - alone - with music all the time. Now I don't. I don't feel that I am any safer as a result, and I fully understand why some people like to listen to music while they ride.

What I don't understand is why some people are being judgmental about what other people are doing.

The deluxe model will have a remote controlled retractable awning with a fold down food/ drinks tray.

I think the Bike Snob term is something like 'double barrelled ass-cannons' - that is what I call them anyways....

the drinks tray must have a cooling function to keep the bevvies cold - like the can holders in my xtrail
