Re: Are iPods, iPhones and bikes a good mix?I'd agree with that if said player-equipped pedestrians also were using a mirror
Riding bikes in traffic - what seems dangerous is usually safe; what seems safe is often more dangerous.
Re: Are iPods, iPhones and bikes a good mix?
Oh, so you have the old "roadie/touro" thing happening. Thought that had died out in the late 80s Yes, I ride a road bike too, do a few Audax distance events. And the roadie has lights plus mirror fitted. Riding bikes in traffic - what seems dangerous is usually safe; what seems safe is often more dangerous.
Re: Are iPods, iPhones and bikes a good mix?earphones - no
external speakers - maybe not hearing approaching object from behind you - riding too slow.
Re: Are iPods, iPhones and bikes a good mix?No music for me, my mind is busy enough without the added distraction of Death metal.
Re: Are iPods, iPhones and bikes a good mix?In my opinion riding while using devices that lessen your hearing sense and increasing distractions is mighty close to negligence. I have only assumed it is an ilegal act, if not, it should be. I am constantly amazed at how many cyclists are quick to blame SMIDSYs ( or whatever they are labelled), however the same cyclists fail to do everything in their power to keep themselves safe. They sherk their own responsibility then blame others for not taking up the slack.
Re: Are iPods, iPhones and bikes a good mix?
A SMIDSY is someone who actually fails to see a cyclist (or other road user). When using an mp3 player I have never come close to doing this. There is no shirking of any responsibility - my responsibility is to look out for other vehicles and give way where legally required. Listening to an mp3 player does not prevent this. Riding bikes in traffic - what seems dangerous is usually safe; what seems safe is often more dangerous.
Re: Are iPods, iPhones and bikes a good mix?I agree with KR. It is just common sense not to restrict your senses while cycling. To do so is dangerous and selfish. Let's get our own house in order as first priority, then work on the behaviour and attitudes of non-cyclers.
Re: Are iPods, iPhones and bikes a good mix?
Some people would claim that "common sense" would say that I should not ever consider riding a bike in traffic at all I'll happily stick with what is legally correct, together with my long-term experience of what works for me in traffic, thanks. I shall have to disagree with you on this minor safety matter. See ya out there..... Riding bikes in traffic - what seems dangerous is usually safe; what seems safe is often more dangerous.
Re: Are iPods, iPhones and bikes a good mix?
Oh no. And I bet they also break rule #60 I've got stuff on ebay
Re: Are iPods, iPhones and bikes a good mix?Whatever happened to common sense?
Common sense tells me that if your music is so loud that you can't hear your bike's noises you can't hear anything else...and that if you can hear your bike, you can hear whatever else you need to hear. It also tells me, as others have said, that if you are riding in a group and listening to music, you are not really riding with the other guys, just near them. I used to ride - alone - with music all the time. Now I don't. I don't feel that I am any safer as a result, and I fully understand why some people like to listen to music while they ride. What I don't understand is why some people are being judgmental about what other people are doing. Smile and wave boys, smile and wave.
Are iPods, iPhones and bikes a good mix?Can I stem mount my iPad so I can watch movies while I am commuting? ... Has anyone tried this?
Re: Are iPods, iPhones and bikes a good mix?
Just hold the thing in one of your hands geeeez, you still have the other hand free to signal, brake, steer & shift gears with I'm trying to develop a new interactive, entertainment/ training system where one rider will mount a 37" LCD TV to the rear of their bike much like a triantalope with a couple of crutch rockets ( triathlete with rear facing water bottles). The rider in front will have a DVR on their helmet transmitting live images to the person behind thus creating a virtual riding experience whilst enjoying a headwind free ride The deluxe model will have a remote controlled retractable awning with a fold down food/ drinks tray. Gas propulsion.......it's natural don't fight it.
Are iPods, iPhones and bikes a good mix?Ooh.... That will get the bogans out of their utes and into/onto vélos!.
Re: Are iPods, iPhones and bikes a good mix?
it will only work if it has an espresso machine for coffee in it. Life is not about waiting for the rain to pass.....it's about learning to dance (or ride) in the rain.

Re: Are iPods, iPhones and bikes a good mix?Tell me again why it's legal in every state in Australia to use a mobile phone while driving a car...
Oh that's right, it's not legal. Interesting that this is a thread about using ipods and MP3 players while on a velocipede.
Are iPods, iPhones and bikes a good mix? What's wrong with the Black Eyed Peas?
Never underestimate the power of ignorance
Re: Are iPods, iPhones and bikes a good mix?
Where do I start?
Re: Re: Are iPods, iPhones and bikes a good mix?
Ah, they were good until Fergie joined!
Re: Re: Are iPods, iPhones and bikes a good mix?
mmm Fergie
Re: Are iPods, iPhones and bikes a good mix?
I think the Bike Snob term is something like 'double barrelled ass-cannons' - that is what I call them anyways.... the drinks tray must have a cooling function to keep the bevvies cold - like the can holders in my xtrail Xtracycle, Surly Long Haul Trucker, Bike Friday New World Tourist, Giant TCR, 9:zero:7
