frame swap - what to do with cables.

Postby jeff_o » Tue Dec 20, 2011 11:51 am

I'm about to swap frames: planning to buy 1 size larger as my current frame is small for me. I need opinions on cables, when you swap frames, do you buy a new set of brake/shift cables and housings?

I tend to reuse the old cables but after each rebuild you cut a small portion at the end of the cable (had to cut the housing too). New frames might have the cable stoppers located differently too, so i dunno how you guys handle this?

is there a particular brand? or technology of inners and outers that i should be looking for? e.g. teflon or silicon lined, fine or coarse braided, etc etc?

I have to admit that when I did a frame swap I reused some of the cables... chopped the rear brake and gear cables to use for front ones. Call me stingy, I say Reduce, Reuse, Recycle :).

definitely get new cables.

I've tried a hell of a lot of cables out there. Shimano, Sram, Gore, Nokon, Powercords, Aligators, iLink and Yokozuna.
They all have there pros and cons. I have to say Yokozuna are the best IMO. (they're also probably the hardest to setup also)
I've heard the new PTFE cableset from Shimano are excellent also but no one has used them for over 6mths so it's hard to say how long they'll last.
Powercordz inner cables are crap on Sram shifters. Only hardcore weightweenies should use them.

FYI i have Sram Red groupo. What groupo do you have?
yes, I'm an overweight weight weenie

save 50 %!!! use back one in front mech + back brake on front. Clean and lube. Spend the rest on beer/clenbuterol.

I've been happy with Jagwire inner cables and outers. Not very expensive as well.
