If you're sure it's a Katana, then it's a safe bet that it is built from Tange Infinity. Check the seatpost diameter and it should be 26.4mm.
yep, im 100% certain its a Katana . and yes seatpost is 26.4ish. thanks for the heads up guys, the bike hasnt had much done and wont now for a while as unit owners have decided to sell so now i have to stuff around boxing everything and trying to find somewhere to live at what must be the most inconvenient time of the year. good news though ill move into a place with a garage this time. anyway here it is so far, front derailleur is on now too. i was lucky enough to get a good colour match for the cranks to match the derailleurs. id like to put on some exage decals too if possible, something small and tastefull.

thanks, unfortunately though it stops me from enjoying a lot of things. i used to build 1/35 scale model kits back when i was a teenager. i won competitions and built them for Grace Bros in the 80's but had to just stop as it was getting to the point where i would bin something that "wasn't quite perfect" and i haven't touched one since. i'm starting to get that same thing now with the bikes actually so i know i need to step away and not get so disappointed even though i know i already am. i get more enjoyment from everyone else's work. anyway ill keep going as planned. Tange Infinity decal came in the mail today, i need to study the Shogun thread so i know where the most likely place to put it on is.

Looks to me like things are progressing very nicely Mark. I'm looking forward to seeing it finished.

Yeah, wow... certainly improved them entry level puppies. Look better than if they were NOS.
I may think twice about turning over a some old 300 exage cranks now myself...

Reckon the finish will hold up well?

i think over time the paint will scuff where the shoes rub in the usual spots, i used automotive paint and primer and gave the cranks a good etched surface to start with. there's two coats of clear over two coats of metallic and one coat of primer it should hold up i guess, by the time i get around to riding the paint will have cured pretty well. my biggest concern is what kind of caps to use, Ive put some generic black ones on and they look okay but after seeing those cranks that munga has pointed out perhaps a bit of chrome bling. but i think i'm being a bit precious over something so small so ill leave it for now.

Hey Mark, if it's any consolation, I'm a bit the same way.

There are a few little things wrong with my Raleigh project. Eg: I overtightened the shifter clamp and put some marks in the brand new paint. I also managed to do the same thing with the seat post pinch bolt. Even though most people won't notice things like this, you can still take them personally... but you know what? All of my angst over these minor details dried up when I took it for a ride. That's the advantage of bikes and riding them. They make you feel better about everything. I'm sure that you will feel the same when you get onto the Katana for its first ride once it's finished.

A couple of Katanas from the era:

Looks roughly 100mm below the seat lug to me.

thanks for that. i tried it in that spot first but found it more tasteful to have it less pronounced, it was quite an ordeal to make such a simple decision for something so minor  and of course the second i stuck it on i changed my mind.

D'oh! That's where they usually hide the 1020 Hi-Ten stickers, isn't it?

*generally* decent tubing is advertised up top.... think reynolds, columbus... the few Tange 900 frames, one Tange 5 PG and one Tange 2 frame I have had all have it <100mm from the beneath the nape of the seat/top tube join on the seat tube.

I just noticed I have a Tange Prestige decal on the lower part of the seat tube on my 1989 Bianchi Equinox.

So sometimes they were put on the lower part of the seat tube!

i think they were silver and slightly bevelled, with a notched recess for a small screwdriver or other prying-type instrument.

been waiting ever so patiently for goods to turn up, sram 6 -8 speed chain arrived in the mail today and new Shimano 105 pedals/cleats the other day ($59 from ebay, free post) cheapest Ive seen in the shops for same is $120. all put together with the greatest of care, hit the road and all is good, no adjustments needed , all i need now is my $13 bar tape to arrive from the U.S and i'm done. Overall i'm a little disappointed but i'm happy with the result as it rides nice, at some stage i would like a stem that is shorter as the reach is a tad more than i would like.

Glad to hear she's on the road Mark.

I'm still waiting for my order from the US to arrive...
It went through the UPS sorting facility in Chicago on the 21st Oct. I emailed the bicycle store I purchased through and they have opened an investigation with UPS which will take up to 23 days to get resolved. I got that email on the 20th Dec.
I've since emailed the bicycle company asking if it's possible to get a defund. It's one of the perils of ordering from overseas... :(

Hey Mark, looking great! Those shifters came up well. How did you attack that problem?
