Amy's Ride Geelong 2012

Postby snark » Sun Jan 01, 2012 5:15 pm

Anyone else doing Amy's ride tomorrow?

I'd signed up for the 120, but with a 41C forecast and icky 35km/h northerly winds for the home stretch, I'm thinking about switching to the 70 km ride. That said, today was meant to be hot but didn't quite get there...

Cheers,
Simon.

Same boat as you snark... booked for the 120km, but will play it out tomorrow on the ride whether I turn right for 70km at the roundabout, or knuckle in for the full 120km.
Just spoke to my mate who signed up at the same time, and he is still keen for the full ride, dependent on the wind/temp.

I will be out there on the course with bib #975, so feel free to say g'day.
My avatar is a photo of my leg, so that's probably the easier way to spot me.
Would be good to place a few faces to the names.

Cheers,
John.

Just seen the updated email from Amy Gillett Foundation, and the 120km route is only available to riders that have set speeds of 30-34km/hr & 35+km/hr.
Everyone else (i.e 25-29km/hr group and slower) is now being asked to ride the 70km route to avoid spending over 4 hours in the predicted 42deg heat.

Very happy we switched to the 70km :). Nice and warm out there now, and we'd still be going if we were doing the 120km.

The winds weren't as bad as I feared. I was expecting the last section along Horseshoe Bend Rd to be pretty horrible, but wasn't too unpleasant at all.

The highlight was saying G'day to Phil Ligget at the Barwon Heads aid station!

Cheers,
Simon.

Did you head out early? Saw you post ride near the carpark pretty early. We did the 28, only on the road for an hour. That was enough!

Yah, we left with the 120 bunch, but as soon as we hit the road we'd made up our mind to switch to the 70 (well, it was made up before then really!).

Cheers,
Simon.

Well wasn't that weather great fun...
Had the wife drop me off, set up my bike and just about to pedal off to the start area, and the first person I notice is bib 281, so said a quick g'day to Simon.
Once I set off on the ride I felt good, and sat at a comfortable pace with my mate on the 70km journey.
We stopped at both stations for fluid top ups and all was good until I headed off from the Torquay aid station and into the headwind.
I think that the lengthy stop for a drink, refill and a chat allowed the wind to pick up a bit.
From there I struggled my way to the finish, with a couple of shade stops required to get through to the end.

Just downloaded the info from my Garmin, and it has the max temp as 44deg, with an average of 34.4
I know it was hot, but how does that compare to the info from anyone else's

This is my second Amy's ride and until I hit the last third (turnoff near the wind turbine) I thought I was okay, then came the wind and the temperature. My antique trip meter doesn't do temperature, but I heard a few say 37.5, what ever it was it was hot and I too had a few shade stops before the finish. Other than the weather, the ride seem well organised, but the PA was a bit loud at the start!!!. My time was 3 hrs 18 for the 70 kms so I am happy with that and Cadel and Green Edge can rest safely for the cycling year ahead!!!.

Egads! I saw a max of 35 on my Garmin Edge 500. Ride info here.

Even though it was nice saying G'day to you, I'm glad I didn't ride in the middle of your little heat bubble :).

Cheers,
Simon (awake now because I had a very good snooze this afternoon...).

I rode the full 120km - the heat didn't bother me too much, but the headwinds were absolutely terrible. There was only a few short areas of riding out of the wind in the last 30km or so, the rest was battling along at about 20kph in the small ring on flat roads! Top temperature was 48 degrees, avg of 37, with the last 2.5 hours spent over 40 (garmin data)

Did the 120km with a mate who dragged me around a fair bit of the way. We decided to head off at 7am to avoid the heat. Got back before lunchtime & was just getting hot at that point. The ride to Ocean Grove was fantastic due to so few riders out, especially from Portarlington to St Leonards. Lot more riders from OG. Tough(er) going from Barwon Heads due to road surface & heat. Surf was fantastic at 13th!

Me and my mate who I was riding along with made the same comment on the surf conditions along 13th. Probably helps explain all the cars trying to find parks along there too.
Garmin data is here... http://connect.garmin.com/activity/138207534

As per the comments on the organisiation of the event, the volunteers done a pretty good job, especially in the heat.
