Flying 200?

Postby broke » Tue Mar 31, 2009 4:03 pm

Any one got some suggestions/tips for my first flying 200 tonight? I'm fairly happy with the line I should ride from watching a fair bit of cycling over the years, do people normally go for taller gears? I'm normally on 89.7 for almost all racing but I do spin out occasionaly. I can go to 93.4 which is no problem, I find this a bit tall for the surging of a points/scratch race etc. I think I'm also doing a kilo so it should be fun night!

you'd usually go a bigger gear for the 200 as its a short effort and just about all out speed.

Depends what kind of track your riding on, how fast it is, if its indoors or outdoors etc. before people can make a good suggestion on gears.

Let us know what kinda times your riding as well

i feel best doing a 200 on a 90 or 92

but i am also pretty amateur so dont take that as gospel
if i get killed while out on my bike i dont want a 'memorial ride' by random punters i have never met.

it really depends on what kinda rider you are, a massive sprinter will be able to push a much larger gear than an enduro who can sit at the same pace for hours on end.

Talk about dragging a thread up from the dead

I'm also chasing some flying 200m tips, in particular the line to use when approaching and going through the final turn before the timing line. I've noticed 2 lines used (locally and via Youtube), one is to stay high throughout that turn (turn 3?) hitting the timing line at speed and between the blue and red lines and the other is to dive in at the entry to turn 3 crossing the timing line between the black and red lines.

What do you guru's (i.e non noobs) find works for you and why so? my best time so far is 14:22 on 48x15 using the first method. i still have a long way to go with strength and fitness, but any tactical tips will be appreciated

Cheers

Depends on what sort of track you're riding on Brades, ie flat or velodrome and how far around each is.

A 330mtr velodrome .......trying to think back now. :? Ride the bank hmmm about 2mtrs from the top and be well on your
way to being fully cranked up and drop off, just as the bank starts to taper down and aim for the top line of the sprinters lane
where you have the start line rise from the bottom of the track. Then you just go straight to the bottom line and stay there.

Thanks Foo,

The Velodrome is the Kenrick Tucker Velodrome in Rockhampton which is a 330m track, steep banked concrete track........ I'm sure the steep bank makes it fun :D.
Going by your tips, i seem to be leaving it a little late in dropping down.

Am also going to try a 48 x 14 - tip from a rider last night after 25 lap motor-paced scratch race

Mick,
Here's a bit of retro-video (may give you some pointers) on a similar style Track in '70's.
One of the fastest ever! This guy went on to crack 10seconds in early Eighties.

One more point Mick, and those who may be interested.
Historically 48x14 is the Sprinters Gear.
(trained with, raced and observed many World Class Sprinters)
For it was the most used gear.
Still today it would work (for a trained fast cadence rider)
From my day, see slight variations in times done today, and that's maybe down to track conditions.
Just remember bigger gears, doesn't necessarily mean faster times. That's fact.

Getting your butt handed to you by a 14 y.o. on restricted gearing also confirms that. :D

Wednesday night at training running with a 48x14 for the first time, set a new PB for the 200 at 14.59 taking 0.7 off my previous best - top speed 55km/hr, cadence max 119. Continued improvement of cadence and fitness will help drop the times but i'm pretty happy with that result :D

Mick
Did most of my Track development work on 47x14 training and 200's (at the Track)
Would try this, learn to pedal more smoothly, and you may find you times improve.
(behind a motorpacer, and trying to come over the pacer, in the last 50-100m of a 200m.)
Then at a later date, when you find you may have nearly reached a peak fitness level,
you might want to try 48x14 the Sprinters Gear, at the final stages of your preparation.
Just a suggestion, and I know it works.

I agree with Brenton also on this. :)

If you can do the motor paced training, you will see a substantial increase in your speed and reaction times.

The Qld Track Masters are on here this weekend, are you coming up Foo?

since my post above from 2009, i now do all my mass start racing on a 91.8 and that is the same gear i set my fastest 200 with

i reckon on a 96 i would go well under my PB but i cant be bothered changing gears

Try the 47x14. And train at it, you may get a surprise.

everyone repsonds differently

i have used small gears a fair bit, raced 2 seasons mainly on an 88, sometimes in training we use an 84.6 - i can even recall a couple of sessions on an 81!

i prefer the bigger gears personally, i think for an all out attempt on going for a PB in the 200 i would be better on a 96.4 than a 91.8 by far

for most racing i like a 91.8 because it is big enough that you can still wind it up in a 200 for example, but small enough to get on top of in any gate start events... i hate changing gears and a 91.8 is a pretty versatile all rounder

Alex,
Agree with you 91.8 is a pretty versatile all rounder
Used it often, and won many events on it.
