So. How pedantic are you ??

Postby frodo » Sun Jan 08, 2012 2:48 pm

I was doing my Sunday morning ride today and I saw a fellow cyclist's fiddling with his wheels, so I stopped to see of he needed a hand.

Well apparently nothing broken - he just hates it when his valves don't rotate in sync with each other. i.e. they both rotate in the same position . He was just spinning his front wheel to match the rear.

I had to go - cause I just cracked up laughing.

Does anyone else have these " issues "

Hope you didn't shake his hands before you left, Frodo ... he'll be washing them thirty times afterwards!

Mmmmm............not quite that bad, but I have been known to have a second go at fitting a tyre just because I forgot to line the logo on the tyre up central with the valve.

Well, I just pulled apart my headset as one of the spacers (which has writing on it that you need a magnifying glass to see) was upside down. Took me 3 months to notice it, but once noticed, it bugged the crap out of me.

There's plenty of OCD peeps out there - just over 2% of the 15-54 age population.

As soon as you start turning corners (or weaving in and out of lanes), the valve stems
will mis-align (as each wheel travels a slightly different distance). Would be very
debilitating if you had to stop a re-align the valve stems every time
you turned.

There's a fine line between being "normal" and being more than a
little bit weird, and it's pretty hard to assess this on a casual encounter.

Think about the impacts if what you saw was part of "more than a little bit
weird" OCD behaviour. OCD is often associated with if not a result of
low self-esteem. Laughing at the person would not do wonders for their self-esteem.

Rather than laugh, maybe pass a compliment about some other aspect of their
bike, clothing, person etc.,. Anything you can do so reassure someone who's sailing
close to the borderline is worthwhile, and the rest of us normal people don't mind
a bit of flattery either.

Cheers

Silly fool he wouldn't be riding far before it was out of alignment the moment he turned his handle bar it would be out again. I must admit I am anal in things like GHT mentioned I always line up the tyre logo with the valve or if building a wheel I make sure that the rim sticker is facing to the right side. Same with any hardware that has a logo on it I make sure it's right way up and central etc. Most LBS mechanics are slopping with attention to detail when building bikes which erk me no end and you should look at the sloppy work in department store bikes with things back too front or upside down it's hilarious.

Maybe it has something to do with the valves being aligned for an even weight distribution for a better balance

Yeh I couldn't get too involved in the why's etc.

Just really took me by surprise, that it was his response

Certainly kept my mind spinning for the rest of my ride

Hmm :|

I frequently get a low level irk from my computer magnet doodad being not all that neatly positioned in relation to the reflector, but the slacker in me so far has always won that particular battle ... oh hell, I have to go change it now

it bugs me when stuff isn't working properly on my bike, like the pads rubbing on the discs. i can put it out of my head for a while, but then it comes back and makes me angry

i think i seen some videos i suppose some people have bought them the little plastic covers for you bike just in case it gets scratched

also how about those people have to replace every part on there bike new before they even ridden it and end up spending more than bought it new on on upgrades and never knew if upgrades made any difference or not

That's why I don't bother to ever ride my new bike at all, I just stand there and look at it and the valves always line up...

There is a better than even chance here that the joke is on the OP. He thought about it enough throughout his ride to post it on a forum. My guess is the guy was checking out a slight out of true or had just ridden through some glass and was checking, and then took the opportunity to take the piss. As for lining up tyre logos with the valve stem it at least has its use, makes it easy to find the penetrating object in the tyre after you remove the tube (least that is what I used it for when I rode with tubes - no I do it as a force of habit thing).
