29" Tyres = 700c Tyres?

Postby Aushiker » Sun Jan 08, 2012 2:20 am

Hi

Image

Probably a stupid question but here goes anyway. I was looking (dangerous thing that) at the Surly Orge which is a 29" mountain bike (well sort of) but I notice that Surly spec the complete build with Alex Adventurer 700c rims. I assume therefore that I could fit 700c road tires (for road touring) or 29" mountain bike tyres for off-road riding. Have I got that right?

If yes, any suggestions on good road/off-road combo tyres in 29"/700c?

Just playing with some silly ideas in my head about a Surly Orge.

Yes is the simple answer.
29er and 700c rims are the same diameter.
Some 29er rims will be wider and may not take road tyres (unless they are big, think 28mm +).
My wheelset on my 29er uses Mavic Open Pro road rims. They have been fantastic over the last 4 years.

Definitely yes. And even the wider 29er rims can be dealt with using cyclocross and/or touring tyres....think 700x28 or 700x35.
Ours is not to reason why...merely to point and giggle

I use cyclocross 35c and 23mm road tyres all the time on my "hybrid" without any trouble. One time I had a leaky valve riding on 23mm ultremo R1's "thought it was a puncture" and had no pump. I road about 10km with the rim almost on the ground, pumped it up later and the tube, tyre and rim were all good it never even broke the bead and still use them.

This tyre is a great allrounder light and fast.

23mm Vittoria's, At the moment I'm using 35c Michelin Pilot's a great road tyre and comfortable.
