MaltodextrinWhere do you get maltodextrin? The health food shops around here don't stock it.
I found some brewer's sugar at Woolies. It has maltodextrin in it but they don't say how much. judged, insulted, gone
Re: MaltodextrinIs it the coopers sugar? I bought some to make my own sports drinks but lost the recipe. Would a home brew shop have it?

I've used them before and their stuff is good, minus the fancy packaging with the exaggerated claims. "People have a right to their own opinions, but not their own facts. Evidence must be located, not created, and opinions not backed by evidence cannot be given much weight." -- James W Loewen

Re: MaltodextrinHave bought online from several suppliers and walk in from Ada Street, Taringa.
http://www.adastreet.com.au/content/cms ... TRIN/1710/ I have most of a large box left I bought about 4 mths ago from Ada Street. It's packaged in sealed 500g plastic bags, and am happy to sell you 1 or several if you don't want a lot. I paid around $12 /kg. I looked far and wide and never found pure maltodextrin from supermarkets, pharmacies, health food shops or home brew shops. Had to go online or to a supplement retailer. I messed around making my own gels, but eventually realized it's less hassle to buy 120ml flasks and stick cordial, salts, and maltodextrin in. No need to brew it up into a gel.

Re: MaltodextrinYou should be able to get it a any good home brew shop.
Edited for typo's Unless you are at the front of the pack the view's the same.

Perfect. I can ditch the cattle prod. judged, insulted, gone
Re: Re: Maltodextrin
That's basically what I do, but chuck each into the water of the bidon. The local home brew shop sells bags of dried corn syrup labelled as 'brew improver' ... 2 kg for $20 IIRC. Beats $3 for about 20g in a commercial gel. Maltodextrin gives beers and stouts a creamier texture, apparently.
Re: MaltodextrinK-Mart (at least in Geelong) sells Coopers Maltodextrin in 500g boxes. I can't recall the exact price, but it's somewhere around the $5ish mark. Note that Coopers sells other brewing sugars as well - get the box that explicitly says "Maltodextrin" on it.

Re: MaltodextrinTry a supplament place too - where all teh bodybuilding stuff is.
Its typically marketed as "pure carbs", look at the label & it'll be high carbs & low sugars
Re: MaltodextrinCoopers brewing sugar is 80% dextrose and 20% maltodextrin. I got some from Woolworth's and used it for the first time last week to make some gel, and it was a bit sweet for my liking due to the high dextrose %. I used some of it on a sweltering ride last week and it seemed to do the trick though. I got a jar of rice syrup to try out with my next batch of gel.
Re: MaltodextrinIf you're in or around North Sydney, then you could pick some up from Dave's Homebrew shop. I think they are 1kg packets. The booster and body pack are what you get at Woolies labelled Brew enhancer 1+2, which are a certain %age mix of different sugars. Dave has 100% Maltodextrin for $9.60/kg. Other homebrew shops might have it as well. The main ones that I know of in each captial city are:
Brisbane - Craftbrewer (don't have it on website, but should have it in store) Melbourne - Grain and Grape (don't have it on website, but should have it in store) Adelaide - Beer Belly (have it for $6.50/kg) Perth - Gryphon Brewing (don't have it on website, but should have it in store) There's many more different stores, but they are the main ones that I know of.

Re: Maltodextrinhow come you want it?
If you can't explain it simply, then you don't understand it well enough.
Re: Maltodextrin
Thanks for the tip PawPaw. I dropped in to Ada St. It's pretty handy. I bought some maltodextrin and some Arginine from them on the strength of a trial I read about a while ago. judged, insulted, gone
Re: Maltodextrin
Fuel. It's starch - relatively low GI sugar. I put it in my biddens for rides over 50 km along with other stuff. judged, insulted, gone
Re: Re: Maltodextrin
Yep, high GI Gatorade style powder and low GI maltodextrin give your bidon most of what a gel will. And if you crush up a No-Doze in a mortar and pestle ... Last edited by clackers on Mon Jan 09, 2012 8:44 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Re: MaltodextrinI've got a box of no-doz in the freezer, though prefer a double shot piccolo pre-race.
Just remember a high dose of it can kill ya I also add BCAAs (leucine, isoleucine, valine)and beta alanine to my mix.
Re: MaltodextrinAny homebrew shop will have maltodextrin, also known as corn syrup, I use it all the time for my home brew.

Re: Maltodextrin
When I researched this and spoke to several local home brew shops, I was told there is a difference between corn syrup and maltodextrin. The former has shorter dextrose chains with a dextrose equivalent of >= 20 DE. The latter has longer chains with DE between 5 and 20. These are absorbed more slowly by the gut than the shorter corn syrup chains, which is the only reason to take maltodetrin. None of the home brew shops had 100% pure maltodextrin. They all had shorter chain sugars added.
Re: Maltodextrin
Interesting, it may be 100% maltodextrin though, just not the sort your after, it looks like you can get maltodextrin from other things besides corn, it just so happens home brew uses a corn based maltodextrin. I used to use Maxim energy powder that claims to be 96% maltodextrin.
Re: Re: Maltodextrin
Just wondering how much you put in ??? The Gatorate poweder is usually about 2 scoops per biddon, Do you replace 1 scoop with maltodextrin or add 2 scoops ontop of the gatorade ???? Thanks Great Jens Voigt Quotes:

Re: Maltodextrin^^^ I don't have any recommendation. I've been using 2 desert spoons of maltodextrin in addition to anything else and that seems to work. It disappears in plain water and is almost tasteless.
