Want a 2012 Trek Flat Bar Roadie? BE CAREFUL!

Postby vaeske » Wed Jan 11, 2012 9:56 am

I know someone has posted about this one, but i'd assume the 2012 models would've come out to Australia around this time...

US Consumer Product Safety Commission's Recall for Trek's 2012 Flat bar Roadbikes

If you're thinking about it...check and re-check.

Maybe you need to edit the alarmist heading a bit.

i.e. Narrow it down to type and model and likelihood.

4 reports out of 27,000 bikes is not a major catastrophe

4 in 27k broken saddle clamp bolt?
Can I hazard: “user error”?

tell me something, if 4 in 27,000 isn't such a bad number, would you go out and buy one? I wouldn't...

Yep.

What is 4/27000 as a percentage?

That's your failure rate.

...and I'd assume if it was subject to a recall in the US it'll be rectified on the models for sale here, if it hasn't been already as that release is from almost 3 months ago....

That said - 4 in 27,000 is not insignificant, given the bikes had only been in use for at most a few months when that notice went out - and that's only the reported rate.

good luck with that one. failure of the bolt doesn't mean the rest of the stock are gonna be safe...just saying...

You would only have to check the bolt, if it has a ring around the stamp mark then it is OK.

Its a seatclamp bolt, which is the most commonly user adjusted bolt on a bicycle. its a comfort/beginner commuter bike, being sold to the most obese population in the world, and seat posts occasionally creak, and owners occasionally get annoyed by creaks and overtighten bolts. Its also a plain example of factory spec substitution (ie trek specifies X, factory specifies X, bolt supplier supplies X for 6 months, then sneaks in Y when he thinks the factory has forgotten what the bolts look like.

I'm suprised they haven't broken 4 FX frames in that number to be honest. Goes to show many of them aren't actually racking up 8000 km+ a year.

I am sure they have. I have broken 2 FX frames through normal use, though "normal" for me is 8,000km+ per year. It is entirely feasible that frame failure with this amount of usage is just considered waer & tear and not a defect (despite the lifetime frame warranty). I haven't seen them recall the frames though.
