For me mate its like this, rolling hills are the little gentle rolling hills with no major drama to it and the Hills are the "Look up at the sky" jobs. Thats how I look at it mate.wardie wrote:Just wondering how people classify their rides in Bike Journal. My normal work day starts at 04:45 and finishes at about 13:30. I try to motivate myself to commute to work about 3 times a week (19km round trip). I then ride or run (or both) in the afternoon until about 5pm, at which time I blow the froth off a few beers while I'm doing the clothes washing and getting dinner prepared for the family. A little time with the missus and daughter plus tv/computer time then it's bed at about 9pm. On the weekends it long, early rides and then family time.
So there you go Duds - I can have a life and ride and still squeeze a few frothies in

I've now ridden nearly 2,100km on my new Bacchetta Corsa recumbent bike. It is so good to ride 50+ km, get off the bike and still be able to feel the block 'n tackle. Last Tuesday I rode the 93km from Temora to Wagga. Had a tub, watched a movie, had lunch, then rode a third of the way back before my wife caught up with the car and bike rack (she insisted my riding wasn't going to get in the way of us enjoying a BBQ with friends!).
Keep up the great work and cheers, Mathew

Wal42 wrote:Not riding around Australia, I did explain last week that I got a government job Nov last year, so I only work 4 days a week, cycling to work saves me 80minutes a day over public transport (so I'm back to commuting by bike) & have 3 full days to ride. I've now got no kids at home, wifey does her own stuff when she's not at work, cycling is my hobby, I really enjoy just switching 'off' & riding where ever the road takes me. Been from Brisbane down just over the border & back, rode up to the Sunshine Coast & back today, some days I just ride around Brisbane metro area for 12 hours. I don't look at time or speed, I just watch my heart rate, when you're not thinking about what you're doing it's really easy & enjoyable. Do I ever know where I'm going when I ride off from home? No, I just pack the pump, 4 tubes, the mobile, $50 cash & a heap of energy gels, etc & go.
I usually get home from my work commute, drink 2 litres of water then have a few brews. It's not that some of us don't have lives, but basically got a nice routine worked out were you fit riding in to all the other stuff you have to do. I'm winding down to retirement, my major priority is relaxation (my son's new compact speedcar may impact on my relaxation some though), I work enough to keep my super balance going up, pay the bills & afford to run the bikes, it's they way I've organised it all.
Unlike some of the others, I don't run, my knees are not up to it anymore, so there's more time for riding.
I don't care where I am on the list, I'm not riding for the list, if you like I'll stop logging my rides, it doesn't bother me, if anyone wants to use my mark as motivation then that's good for them, I've ridden 10-15K every year for the last 30 years or so, I now plan to ride about 25K a year from here on, when I retire it may go up again, I never know where, how far or whatever I'm doing, bar about 5 or 6 times last year (not counting the charity rides) I rode on my own, I just go until I start not enjoying it then I head home.
It's purely that simple for me.
A big thanks to LTR for taking over the role of 'secretary', not sure if I want to see photos of you in a short skirt though.

Anyway - finally I am on the board.... 14kms this morning, 2 weeks before the surgeon said I should get back on the bike. For those who didn't see my post in the opening days of this thread, I had a major tear of the rotator cuff repaired in surgery on Dec 12th.
Anyway - I had a mate load my bike in his car and we drove down to the smoothest stretch of road we could think of - Station St, between Mordialloc and Patterson River. The legs felt good however any small bump in the road I immediately felt in the shoulder. I was tempted to do more but the growing throbbing pain in the shoulder persuaded me to stop at 14kms.
It's a start and now I just have to keep at it....
I have also joined the metric century club and now have only 9 days left to get a 100km ride done.....mmmmm, not sure about that one!
