Scott Foil R2 - Loud Head Stem (Tech Question)

Hi everyone,

Not 100% sure if this is the right place to post this as it may be a technical question.

I have just got myself a 2012 Scott Foil R2 and I have come across a little bit of an annoying issue that I feel is of concern to my baby.

When ever I am standing up and pedalling and putting a bit of pressure on the hoods it makes this very loud and concerning scraping noise. I've done a Google search but I have come up empty. Tried to get in contact with my trusty mechanic but he has been away with TDU commitments.

I would really appreciate any feedback on how I can fix this highly annoying problem.

G'Day Stuart. Welcome outside.

This'd be one of those "dozens of possible sources" things IMO. As a first guess, I'd recommend popping the cables from the stops and putting a drop or two of lube in before replacing, might as well try the simpler things first.

Scraping? or is it more creaking?

If it's scraping i'd have a look at the heat set. There isn't much clearance between the headset's bottom bearing and the fork.

Try undoing the stem bolts that grab the fork rake, then undo the headset cap bolt. Tighten up the stem again without tightening up the headset cap bolt.
Jump on the trainer and see how you go. If the scraping stops then you know it's something to do with the headset. Probably a missing washer or spacer.

Scraping that coordinates with your cranks, or wheel rotation?
Could it be wheel flex, rim against new brakes?

Also check that QR skewers are tight enough.
