Thanks PA, I'm technically inept so can't post up maps. Re climbing, the map starts at Blackwood so does not show Windy Point in the profile but then you can see the climb up Chandlers Hill, prob 3-4 km at 4-5%. After that it is your typical rolling Hills route with a nice decent thrown in. Time wise, not sure but maybe an extra 30 mins max.

Hope that helps.

If you are driving and sitting by your car listen to 891AM (ABC radio) for live coverage of the race(this goes for every stage also)

Just want to say thanks to Daccordi for the idea and thanks to PA for the maps.

Convinced my riding partner to take the route - very pleasant once out of Blackwood (Saturday midday, lots of traffic and most not very patient). Difficult in parts but the cool temps of the hills helped us keep our energy although the headwind did a good job of sapping most of it!

We took a few breaks and underestimated the travel time so we rolled up to the finish line just as Valverde was zooming past after taking the stage but that made the ride worth it to see some action up close and personal.

Back home via the Veloway was that much tougher after the ride in - a grand total of 140km for me there and back. Some of you may recall that I'm fairly new to this gig so it was a nice little achievement to tuck under my belt.

Cheers to all of you.

140km is a good effort

5000 people paid something like $170 each to ride 140km on friday
if i get killed while out on my bike i dont want a 'memorial ride' by random punters i have never met.

Jzr- I took the same rout out to Willunga (left at about 7am from Brighton area) and saw the whole race. I took Penny Hill down to Mclaren vale though (lucky you didn't cause u can reach 80+km/hr(pros did about 100km/hr) down it on a huge/dangerous crosswind

Congratz on your achievement!

Penny's Hill was a shocker. I went down it on Saturday morning swearing never to do it again but still found myself doing Willunga Hill for a second time and then Penny's Hill. The cross winds certainly made it 'interesting'.

Spent the day on the hill, BRILLIANT, apart from the cool windy start !!!

Picked ourselves a top spot at 900m to go, setup camp and watched them fly past. Next year, mate will bring caravan and TV, and LOTS more chalk. Oh, and bike for aride in the mroning.

Couldn't beleive the amount of pushies on the hill and riding back.

Well done to the GreenEdge boys & girls. Great start to the season. Bugger that AV pipped Gerro for the stage, but just goes to show that high placings are still important, even if it isn't for the bonus seconds .... :D

It was a great atmosphere on the Hill this year. From what I saw everyone was well behaved, and gave the riders lots of room. I was near the 200m mark. I thought there were more people than last year, and so much more cycling kit (and bike p0rn).

I know some people were there in the wee small hours to get the best spots and set up their tents etc. Next year that will be the way to go if you have a club/group.

Thanks for the advice guys. I made it down to willunga and back. I found the cycleway pretty good, although I did get a bit lost on the way down at the diversion. My fault for not taking the directions with me. Had an awesome day out. Made it to Willunga town in time to see the third circuit and then up the hill in time to see the two laps up the hill. Found a little shady spot big enough for one at the 300 m to go sign. What a fantastic atmosphere, with everyone so excited and friendly. Really enjoyed the circuit in the city on Sunday too. My first time to the TDU, but I am sure to be back.
