I currently commute to the train station along a shared path that follows the Werribee river. I've now got a video camera and out of interest, I mounted it sideways on one of my recent commutes. The footage is quite serene and beautiful!

It's a 13 minute procession of river gums, other trees/bushes and grassland with glimpses of the river water and views of the river bank on the other side of the water all passing by at just the right pace. There's no sign of civilisation, not a house or road in sight. At times you can clearly see my shadow pedalling along, projected onto the trees and bushes next to the path.

I'll try to post some of the footage up (haven't done that before).

If you've got a video camera I recommend mounting it sideways on a sceneic ride for an interesting new perspective!

I've been wanting to do that for a while, it is one of my greatest pleasures to look at my shadow and see the cranks spinning around, man and machine as one.....

Just have to make sure not to get too distracted haha.

Weather in Melbourne was too nice today not to take a little break on the way home.. My commute usually runs between Cheltenham over to Beach Rd and up to Brighton Beach Station to get the train into the CBD (home).

That's on the north side of the station, north of Shaws Rd actually.

The south side of the station is very nice too. Heading south of the station, when you get to the freeway, the river path meets the Federation trail, but you can also keep heading south and ride to the grounds of the Werribee park mansion and the Werribee south beach area.

North of the station, the river path is duplicated on both sides of the river to Shaws Rd/Presidents Park. North of Shaws Rd the path runs on the East side of the river until it ends just short of Hogans Rd.

Plenty of Cafes on Watton St (eg Moka Patisserie, Chocolate Room). I'm sure you could get a take away at Joseph's restaurant at the mansion and enjoy it in the mansion grounds.

PS: There's no shared path between the railway line & Cottrell St. When heading north, cross the rail lines at either one of the crossings (east or west of the station) and get onto the shared path on the other side of Cottrell St. It's only 200m or so of no shared path.

Try the Chatterbox Cafe, Watton Street just around the corner from Duncans Road.
Head up Station Place nearly opposite the cafe and pass to the left of the underground access to the station up to Comben Drive to access the Werribee River Trail.
Follow the trail down to where it meets the Fed Trail, cross over the new viaduct and turn right to go under the highway, watch out for the steep and loose gravel run down under the highway and then follow the path. Riding the bike in the Mansion grounds is a no-no but the Parks people are "too busy" to notice unless you are being stupid about it. Leave the Mansion via the Shadowfax winery access road onto K road, it avoids a longish dusty gravel main entrance road to the mansion. turn left to head back to Duncans Road to take you back to the Chatterbox Cafe for a refresher.
One can easily spend an hour or two just looking around the mansion grounds without entering the mansion itself. It's a great area, a real hidden gem.
