Best bike pump?

Postby ozzymac » Tue Feb 21, 2012 6:59 pm

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone can tell me the best bike pump to carry on the bike, one that will actually pump the tyre up?

Had my first puncture today, and the pump I had with me wasn't to crash hot.

Upon checking the pressure when I got home it only had about 50 psi in it, and even getting that in was a pain, and the pump fell apart....... At least it was enough to get home.

So any suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers

co2 - only use a pump on the road after running out of co2!

Get something LIKE THIS and some more OF THESE and your set :D

I have one of these (actually 2, one on each bike) and it works well.

The old Zefal HPX is out of production and virtually unavailable in bike shops, so my next-best pump of choice is the Lezyne Road Drive.

That one looks like one of the old type hand pumps.

I actually have got a co2 thing on order, should turn up shortly.

But after the cheap pump gave up this morning, time for a new one I think.

Will check out the one recommended, thanks for the replies.

CO2 is all fine and cool, but do bear in mind - it quite rapidly leaches through rubber tubes. Next day you'll need to pump up your tyre with real air.

Lezyne. Whichever to suit your particular wheels. I've got one for the roadie/commuter and one for the MTB. The old skool hose attachment is gold.

This is what I am using, at 99mm it is small enough to fit in my small fizik seat bag with
a Co2 as my primary inflator. Used only as a backup I have used it many times without
fail, it can achieve 100psi but you would be there a while :). Once home a floor pump
is used.
Bigger hand pumps are much faster/easier but have to be frame mounted or carried
ok for the mountain bike, not the roadie but 8)

Is this one the same as the one recommended?

It seems not a bad price if it is?

Certainly is a very good price. It looks to be a fair bit shorter than my Road Drive, so less air volume (slower speed of inflation).

"Oversized" and "120psi" are generally mutually-exclusive terms when it comes to pumps. You need a narrow barrel to be able to pump high pressures, unless you're built like Arnie. You can't get around physics :P

Not the ones I've got (Road Drive and HP drive) but it states it is good for 120 psi. If so, the price is brilliant.

I have Giyo GM71.

It's an excellent pump for the price. Good quality product. Have no trouble getting to 120psi.
This is what I use at home. I carry CO2 cylinders on my bike.

I rode with a guy the other day who had a Crank Brothers pump - http://www.crankbrothers.com/pumps.php

A great piece of kit. Small enough to fit in your jersey pocket and has a High Volume/High Pressure switch.

Another vote for a Lezyne pump. Having the tube between the pump and the valve is a god send.

The downside with CO2 is the number of cylinders you have on board .... I have managed to puncture front and rear in one hit ...

I have a small zefal and my first roadie puncture 60km from home was a nightmare - 30 mins of pumping and the tyre was still half flat, the end of the pump was too hot to hold and my arms and energy reserves were depleted.
I stopped at the next bike shop to borrow their track pump and rewarded their generosity by buying a CO2 kit and a handful of CO2 canisters.
I really wouldnt suggest a hand pump to anyone riding a roadie with high pressures unless you like being horribly inconvenienced at the worst times.

It would be good to know exactly what Zefal pump this was. Certainly not the HPX as it will happily put up to 100psi and more in your tyres in under 5 mins. Zefal did do some larger barrel pumps and plastic pumps that were only suitable for MTBs with 50psi max tyre pressure.

Eg.

They also do the standard type of mini-pumps that are really inadequate for high pressure.

Best bike pump?

Postby ozzymac » Wed Feb 22, 2012 11:30 am

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

On the theme of best of ......

To go with the pump , what's the best all purpose tyre now a days?

Seems tyres that came with the Cannondale have had it. Schwalbe Ultimo. Did about 2400kms on them, is that about normal ? No punctures until yesterday due to tyre worn out.

Cheers

Blackburn Airstik SL
59g, 160 PSI, <$20 online.
Nicely built. Fit to your bike and forget it is there. Has worked very well when I've needed it.

Grippy, good lasting tyre, I would buy Continental, GP4000 (mine have lasted well), Gatorskin (for tough) or GP 4 Seasons (if you want the best of both worlds, for a bit more cash - GP4000 + tougher).

My mates tell me the Schwalbe doesn't last as well, but they make great tyres.

I've used cheap tyres once because they came stock on a bike I bought. Utter rubbish. I'd never waste money on cheap tyres again. Tyres are so key to ride quality, one of the best places to spend money.

I have a Topeak Road Mprph and it will pumpthe tyre a genuine 120psi and you don't need to be Arnie to use it. There is a MTB version as well and also a Mini Morph which as the name suggests is a bit smaller but doesn't have the gauge like the Road Morph.

ive a small hp drive (black and silver, 20cm long) that does both valve types with a double ended, detachable tube/nozzle. pumps my tyres up to about 110 easily and quickish, and if you have the strength will go to 120.

Quite timely. BikeRumour have posted a review of a Lezyne Pressure Drive Mini. Might be worth a read.
