Best home trainer that doesn't cost plenty ...?

Hi guys -

Very new to cycling and with the advent of monsoonal downpours over Sydney, I am looking at home trainers to keep up my training -

The Kurt Kinetic range looks nice, but I don't really want to fork out $500+ .... are there alternatives that may not be 'as good' but decent enough for around the $200 mark at all ?

Chain Reaction Cycles have a few reasonable-looking magnetic and fluid trainers on clearance for <$200 - eg this one.

+1 to the Jet Black Z1 Fluid from chain reaction cycles.

Good value for money, I just bought that exact one myself. I've only had one ride on it so far, it's not completely quiet, but quiet enough not to wake others a few rooms away.

I omitted mentioning they very important fact that my current (only) ride is a MTB 29er - so, I need a trainer that can handle the bigger wheels too .......

Not sure if that affects this scenario ?

I got some rollers from T7 for $200 and they're fine, unlike trainers they really work your balance and pedal technique, they don't have much resistance though so I'm going to modify mine with an eddy current resistance unit.

I'm in the same boat, scared of the rain.

Ebay has some for less than $100 inc delivery. Look similar to the Jetblack one I was contemplating from Goldcross.

Hard to get reliable reviews though.

The Jet Black Z1 fluid trainer is worth it. $370ish in the lbs, but you can get it on sale at times. Quiet, good resistance, keeps the rear tyre quite cool, solid trainer.

I made the mistake of buying a cheap wind trainer initially, it was terrible, at high cadence the roller would fall away from the wheel and you'd be left free spinning at 170+ rpm! The last time I used it the trainer flexed and the bike launched itself out of the trainer and I rode across the garage!

Spend a little bit more on a fluid or mag trainer, it's worth the money for training.

+1 for the Jet Black Z1....I really like riding on mine.
When the weather is crap i just hook the bike up to it (takes about 30 seconds) and away I go.

The Kurt Kinetic Road Machine can be had for less than $500 - see our website.

When you replace your $200 trainer with a kurt, you'll have spent something like $619 on trainers, think about it
