spd and float

Postby mikesbytes » Wed Apr 02, 2008 4:03 pm

I'm usiing SPD pedals for spin class, as those are the pedals provided on the spin bikes.

Has anyone come upon a way to lock out float when using spd pedals? I'd prefer not to have any.

I'm thinking in particular if there is some sort of special non floating cleat I can purchase.

Read this.

Sounded like that you need type 50 SPD cleat for zero float.

I'll take that back, the 70 is not compatible with the pedals being used

So I need SM-SH50. Now where to buy them?

I'm a little confused by the table, so I'll put this out there to those who might be able to interpret it for me;

I use Shimano M-520 SPD pedals. I currently run SH-51 cleats, which have a reasonable amount of free play. If I want to remove said slop, I need SH-50 cleats?

Yes, no float = SH50, some float = SH51.

And BTW McPete, you avatar thingy appears to show an Apollo IV head badge, do you own such a fine bicycle?

Ah, thanks for clearing that up... As for the head badge, that resides on my Apollo III, a finer collection of rusty Tange Hi-Tens there is not :P

Ah OK, I added a 1982 Apollo IV frame/fork with Tange Champion # 2 double butted chrome moly tubing to the collection today. Badge is identical on the same silver coloured paint, so I thought you might have had one of the 'superior' frames/bikes.

I've also discovered that T7 have exauster spd compatible cleats in a non-float version.

i just bought a book called "cycling's greatest misadventures" and the 2nd story is about a guy who enrolled in "spin class" for the first time after getting a new job with some exercise incentives (in those days 100% dominated by women) - anyway - he was so excited and so ridiculously naive he brought in his own pedals and shoes. the result was (amongst many other things) he almost had a serious crash ON a stationary bike with ANOTHER stationary bike!

lol'd my head off!

:)

"It was easy to read, it didn't have pictures (except the cover), i recommend it to people who ride bicycles, it made me laugh. 7 out of 10. (not as good as the BFG but better than your average Asterix)"

.... and that is my (grade 5 worthy) book report.
