Hi Giantrider,
how far away is the race (ie how much training time and how much time do you have time to pick up tips on racing). What sort of distance is involved?
Don't be too negative about your chances, most likely there will be many riders in the same situation. I know with some school racing in Victoria, they split the fields into "novice" and "licensed" racers. I can't give you any tips as i have never raced but hopefully some others will read your post who have some good tips to pass on.
Whatever happens, have fun! If you enjoy racing there are plenty of local clubs around. In Victoria you can find all the local clubs at Cycling Victoria. There are similar organisations in each state, just google them.
cheers!

try to stay near the front, but not at the front. if it's flat, it'll probably be decided in a sprint. so save your energy for the end of the race and ensure you're near the front then - particularly if there's a corner near the finish.

Don't waste whole energy in start, keep the energy until last, play the game with full confident and mind. And yes off-course with honesty.
