Cycling Maps - Victoria

Postby CatCanRide » Sun Mar 04, 2012 12:28 pm

Was in my LBS yesterday and picked up a map "Where to Ride - Melbourne Cycling Map - Map 1: Central Melboune & Inner Suburbs". The bike shop didn't know if there were more maps covering other areas of Melbourne. They said you were supposed to buy the book.

What I like about this map is that it is basically a fold out Melways highlighting cycle paths and routes which allows me to plot where I want to ride using cycle paths as much as possible, and, if something went wrong on my ride I would be able to find my way to the closest train station for getting home. Most of the maps in guide books seem to me to be rather lacking in surrounding area information and seem to have far more information on things like local cafes. :) and don't give much in the way of surrounding streets info.

Wondering if anyone knows if there are more of these in a series - the fact that this one is labelled Map1, encourages me to believe there are - and if so where I would be able to pick them up. Most of my riding at the moment is not covered by this map.

Sounds like the series of Travelsmart maps http://www.transport.vic.gov.au/researc ... smart/maps
Available at LBSs and council offices but often hard to get hold of so best to check first before making a special trip.
Try to choose an LBS near the border of several councils as they might stock all the surrounding maps.

Handy to carry about with you but these days for planning I use Openstreetmap its offshoot Opencyclemap
http://www.openstreetmap.org and click the "+" at the right and choose Cycle map

Thanks for that KenG, I will chase up some of those maps from council.

Hadn't heard of OpenStreetMap before - looks really good. Bookmarking that one for future use. :D

Finally got around to dropping into my local council offices to collect some Travel Smart maps.
Each council distributes for their own municipality so will be ringing around the other councils to chase up the other maps.

Have to admit I "love" their sugestions for securing your bike which includes:

"Remove your lights or secure them with super glue or cable ties. Disguise the value of your bike with stickers and tape or even a fake DIY rusty paint job."

KenGS thanks once again for the info. The Travel Smart maps are exactly the type of thing that I was wanting to be able to carry with me on the bike.
