Hux wrote:Went out yesterday for a recon of the area. The ride from Peaks down and south to Kalbar is pretty good. Few hills but nothing out of the ordinary. The ride back out from Boonah on the Yamanto rd has plenty of hills and took some sting out of me especially in the heat. The Garmin recorded up to 40* heat and I felt it.

By the time I got to Peaks Xing I was wrapped to be on relatively flat roads that you could pedal at a constant speed.

Not sure if I will do the 100mi but will be doing some more rides out there. Very pretty country for a ride around.
Good endorsement from a big unit. I think I'll give the imperial century a crack.

Thinking of doing this, how steep are them dirty hills, what do they compare with around Brisbane?

I live out the bayside so no idea what real hills are  IMHO 25% worse than riding Mount Petrie Road at Belmont and for 40km instead of 10.

All I know is that those country rolling hills and heat sux the guts out of a big unit like me.

Heading back out this Sunday for another loop out there (rain depending).
Gotta get myself hill fit for the Sydney to Surfers end of April.

I had to give it a miss as my wife has a pony club muster on that day and she got in first so I got the kids, and I'm not sure I'll manage it with the kids trailer attached to the back of the bike. So pooey, oh well there is always next year.

I'm in for the 100k again, while I'm keen to do a 160k ride I think that the Ipswich version is a little beyond me at this point.

Maybe next year!

I'm in for the 100K as well. Getting a bit nervous reading about all the hills though! I've not done a 100 yet. Did 70 odd yesterday and got some cramps towards the end. I'm gonna try taking some Magnesium tablets this week and drink plenty on the day. Do they have water/cordial at the rest stops? I'm a big unit like hux and go through the water pretty quick.

The hills are not overly difficult, and the temperatures should be comfortable.
It is the wind that can be the most draining on this ride, so cross fingers for a calm day.
Try to join a bunch travelling at a pace you are comfortable with, so there is some shelter from the wind.
And watch out for gumbies with poor bunch manners/skills. My wife has been knocked down twice by idiots who caused expensive damage to her bike, concussion and a detached retina, and the loss of one of her fingertips before riding away with barely a backward glance.

It would've been good training for the Middy Smiddy i have coming up to. Maybe next year - i still want to have a crack at the Imperial after doing 2 Metrics. Good luck to all those doing it

Hi there

The Ipswich 100k was my first 100 ride last year....they had water and sports drinks last year at the stops.
The stops are well spaced out at approx the 25, 50 and 75k points.

Hopefully the wind won't be too bad....apparently the roads are in better condition compared to last year, I found the wind and condition of the roads to be issues last year.

Enjoy the ride.

I did the imperial 100 last year but I don't recall the wind being an issue (maybe due to the cramp pain I was suffering back from Boonah :). It looks to be a southerly breeze so will help for the run back north (except the cross breeze on parts).

As for road conditions, they were wonderful compared to the Rainbow ride in November.

Thanks Lisa, I'm looking forward to it. Are there any steep hills, or is it more rolling hills? ie. anything like Cootha or the Gateway?

Hopefully I can find a bunch doing 25-30km/h to join onto.

You can put away the 28 and leave the 25-11 on. There are a few short steep sections >9%, but they are only for a 100 odd metres or so. Most of the hills are either rolling or a Mt Gravatt grade 5-6% and anything in between.

cheers

I'm doing the 50km again (3rd time) as i'm introducing a novice friend to the joys of a social, scenic ride. Done quite a few 40km rides with her so this should go off without a hitch. The last 2 times were on the mtb, but i'll use my road bike this time as i feel the need for speed, and looking forward to getting the average speed between 25 & 30kph over the whole ride. Hoping to get some century rides done this year around Brissie so i can do the 100km in 2013...

Good plan Big_Red. I did the Cycle of Giving ride with my wife recently and she's a newbie cyclist. the 35kms was enough for her to get a taste for it and be pretty well worn out. It was a lot of fun actually.

I noticed last night that you are just ahead of me on bikejournal and know that i really need to HTFU to pass you and get in the ACF riders top 200 - at least i'm keeping ahead of the red triangle. I'll be dropping some coin for tools/gear from c r c tomorrow (payday, yay!) and i also need to get at least 2 new pairs of knicks. I have to confess that the cycle commuting bug has really bitten and i'm further coming to detest travelling on train/bus to work in the city. Usual commute is 35km round trip and I don't get any aches from doing it, which is a good thing considering i'm on the wrong side of 40. I had set a resolution this year to cycle commute to work at least twice a week, but 3 months in i'm thinking 3x a week would be even better. Twice a week saves me ~$800 this year in public transport fees, which is far better in my pocket rather than translink's. I just wish the cursed rain would stay away.

If anyone else here is doing the 50km ride, i'll be the fella on the monster sized red/yellow/blue vintage Paconi road bike. Come say g'day.

I agree, public transport sucks compared to riding. I sat on the stupid bus the other day and it took 25 minutes to get up Roma Street FFS. I haven't checked bikejournal for ages, but beating me wouldn't be hard! I don't commute much any more (school and kindy dropoffs are killing me!) but have been doing river loops and the odd weekend ride with a group I joined up with at Christmas time. I've been trying to make the rides I get "quality" though and finally cracked a 30km/h avg river loop this morning.

I'll keep an eye out for you. I'm on a red/black/white EMC with Deep V's.
