SMH interview with Clover Moore

Postby Kraeg » Sun Apr 01, 2012 5:12 pm

Okay, it's not about NSW (except for the S... Sydney!)...

http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/at-home-with- ... 1w50k.html
Moore believes she is doing something about making a better city. ''How can you just keep adding cars? The road space doesn't change. Eighty five per cent of people who come into the city don't go by car, they take public transport, cycle or walk.''

In 2005-06, the share of bicycle traffic in the city was just 1 per cent. Since Moore's bike-lane network began, the number has risen to 6.9 per cent and she thinks it will soon reach 10 per cent. After the lanes are finished she wants to introduce a bike-hire scheme similar to the popular one pioneered by the mayor of London, Boris Johnson.

I'm struck by Moore's lack of political preoccupation. Her language is of ''projects'', ''improvements'' and ''the community''. The visions that make her such a divisive figure seem no more important to her than the small outcomes.

Despite what you might think about her, I thought that article was very interesting.

Its a pity that more people didn't perhaps share at least some of the vision.

I liked the fact she said "How can you just keep adding cars? The road space doesn't change. Eighty five per cent of people who come into the city don't go by car, they take public transport, cycle or walk.

I think that is a fact that our radio jocks and politicians seem to be ignoring.

Hi Glenn,

They are not ignoring or disputing the 85%/15% split - just that they are in the 15% side and will advocate for their own best interests.

There is no leadership or acting for public interest in the media and politics.

No wonder the constituents love her.

Are they making any more of her? Can we have one too?
