Route suggestion - m7 to narellan

Postby ajfriar » Wed Apr 04, 2012 11:36 pm

Hello,

Anyone got a suggestion for getting from the Canberra end of the m7 out to narellan? I rode Camden valley way, it was ok. I am curious if there is a better alternative.

Cheers Andrew

Personally I'd rather just go on the M5/Hume Hwy breakdown lane than use Camden Valley Way. The latter road is more dangerous, with narrower and crumbling shoulders and just a single car lane each way. Or you could use a back route through Ingleburn.

Thanks for that, I had that thought but was under the impression this was closed to cyclists.

I think I will take the m5 next time I head out that way.

Pretty sure it's open all the way now. It was closed after Ingleburn for a while during road widening, which is now complete.

We drove along it today. Looks pretty good, think I may have a chance to ride it next Saturday.

Basically riding from west Ryde across the Olympic park, onto the m4 cycle way, then ~6km on the m4 breakdown lane, up onto the m7 cycle way for 20km then onto the m5 taking the first exit into campbeltown.

Hopefully a good run.

Cheers for the suggestion.

Thsi bikely link shows a route from SOP to Liverpool via the Prospect Cycleway (well it's in reverse). Depending on travel time, (prospect is not open 24hrs) that is an alternative to the M4 shoulder.

This is the route I ride home from Rhodes to Mount Annan.

Note: You do not need to exit at Brooks Road, Ingleburn anymore as the M5 is open all the way.
I also ride on the footpath for about half a kilometre of Roberts Road from Liverpool Road to Norfolk Road. Yes it is illegal, no I don't particularly want to die on Roberts Rd...

Sean,

Thank you for that suggestion - I note it is considerably shorter than the way I went a few weeks ago, m4/m7/Camden Valley way was ~73km. Not a bad option for getting the directions.

How do you find the M5 to ride on? I assume the shoulder is quite good and speed of the traffic isn't to much of a problem?

Cheers

Andrew

M5: Depends on the time of day and direction of travel.
Routinely in the peak afternoons I ride faster than the vehicles are going from Belmore Rd through to Camden Valley Way exit. After that they'll be doing about 100km/h + but they've never bothered me. Shoulder can be variable in its condition. The road surface is good for the most part except for a couple of small ridges between the toll gates and Moorebank Rd. Depending on when the crews have been through there could be a fair amount of debris on it though.

Keep your eyes open and it should be fine.
