Derailleur Hanger?

Postby Mr888 » Sat Jan 27, 2007 1:34 pm

Hi Guys

I'm currently building up a Mountian bike made up of parts I've picked up over the years. Everything's come together nicely, but does anyone know which type of derailleur hanger should work with this frame?

Image

The LBS, didn't have a clue. There's nothing on the frame as to indicate what kind of make it is except for the word "Nomad" on the rear stays.

Any Ideas?

It'd have to be a Shimano item wouldn't it? I mean, has anyone seen an mtb with anything but Shimano?

It looks a bit similar to my Giant???
The bike's at home, I'm at work. I'll look later and reply.

Why don't you try the derailer off your roadie for fit

Thanks Mike, but I'm not after the derailleur. I'm after the HANGER. They usually come with the frame, but are available as parts. Many are made from plastics (don't know why as they break so easily). There are so many different types out there it's not funny.

I thought that with our collective knowledge we might find something

Cant say I know what one it would be but I was given heaps of bikes bits this week so I will have a look and see if any of the hangers look like they would be any good to you. How old is the frame?

mmm, I just went and looked at all 4 bikes in the shed and none of them are compatible.
- Giant OCR road has a different hanger
- Avanti Atomic mtb has a different hanger
- Huffy mtb has the hanger as part of the actual lug
- Repco superlight has the hanger as part of the actual lug

Seems you best option is to take the bike down to the LBS.

If all else fails, you could get Bundy to weld in a new lug, don't quote me on the price but I think he charges something like $40.

It's not Giant hardtail MTB, at least not the same series.

The frame looks more of a modern design (probably 3 years old, but it's been well used). It uses the A-head system for the forks and head set, and 31.8mm clamp for the front derailleur. (I believe that this is not the standard on most MTBs?)

It would be good if you could tell us a bit more (age, manufacturer, 'price point' etc.) about the frame, but it is possible that it used a 'low end' derailleur as they have an integrated hanger. Obviously, if it's a serious frame then that wouldn't be the case and it would have used a replaceable hanger and you will find it hard to 'replace' without knowing what the frame actually is. :?

It looks like a recess for a replaceable hanger, complete with hole for the bolt, not sure about how low end it would be looking at the work around the dropout? But there is the six speed cassette on a bolt up axle too???

Google didn't help, I'm officially lost.
Can't wait to be shown the way (fingers crossed) 8)

Like I said, the bike is being put together with bits and peices. The six speed was actually off my old-old k-mart special. The wheels were still in good condition, so on it went.

The friend that gave me the frame has moved to England so I can't confirm the brand. I did speak to his sister and she says that it could be either a specialized or santa cruz. I'll have to send him an email and hopefully get a definate answer.

BTW: Don't give up on eBay. It's been a god send at times....

Definitely not Specialised, their hangers used two 2mm bolts to secure the hanger, not the single chainring bolt shown.
As far as I know, the only hardtail that Santa Cruz has sold is the Chameleon which has horizintal drop outs.

and try to match the shape at the bolt end as close as possible or do what i did and call phantom cycles (even better send them the pic) and hope they have something similar in stock

Hi Guys

Thanks for all the help. My friend replied to my email, and informed me that the frame is a KHS Arlite 500 Nomad (didn't tell me what year). Anyway, derailleur.com came to the rescue (thanks Mike for the tip) and they do have a replacement part (#52). Unfortunately it will cost me about $50 to send here.....that's half of what I've spent on this bike?

I guess I'll have to hunt down one from eBay, junk heap or another local bike shop. :?

Cheers

Hi, I will keep an eye out for you as I come across heaps of parts. I was also talking to the guy over at Canterbury today and I took the pic with me of your bike. He had something very close but not quite. He thought he may have one out the back but was flat out building tandems for this coming weekend so didnt have time to pull out all these bikes. (I am guessing he must have a collection of old spares out the back) He said he is seeing a friend this week and he will take the pic with him as they may know or have the part. I will try and call him before he leaves on friday to find out for you if he had any luck.

If not, I have plenty of mountain bikes here.

Karen.

Sorry, I have tandems on the brain as I was talking about them today. I meant to say Penny Farthings. -Thats what he was making. I am often over that way as one of the wheelchair places is just up the road so called in to see them while I was there.

Thats Alan or Al as we call him. Hes got everything in his shop, if he can find it.

You must live really close to me. Theres a ride on Saturdays my club does called Saturday slowies. It sets off at 6.30am from cnr Marrickville rd and Illarware road Marrickville and they ride over to centennial park if you are interested.

I am at Toongabbie, near Parramatta. I am over that way a lot though. Currently have an issue with an old knee injury so once thats sorted I will try and head over to check out the slowies ride. Yes he definately had everything in his shop. He was out the back mostly so I was chatting with his brother. Learnt all about old postcards, how he hates the mess of the shop and all about the paint they used to make. (was still paint on the shelf from 15yrs ago) I didnt mind except I was busting for the loo and it was killing me! I love the old bike shops. And yes, I have been to Micks store too. He is a lovely guy. Fixed a sturmey gear for me and wouldnt charge me. So I bought something from his shop cause I felt guilty. You dont find that kind of service anymore.

I hear storys about Al's house and back yard, haven't been in.

The ride leaves out the front of Micks store. Sogood is banned from Saturday Slowies, he's too fast.

I was told there was 50 bikes in the yard. I suspect there would be more. There are many people in Sydney who have collections of bikes sitting in their yards. You would die at some places I have seen. They are not hobbyists either, simply accumulate too many things in one place.

As for going fast, no prob there with me. Would more than likely get booted for being too slow!
