Riverstone Ride 2012
Postby RobK » Tue Mar 13, 2012 9:59 pm
Just a quick note to say that the annual Ride 2 Riverstone event is happening this year om Sunday May 6th.
Route distances are 35, 60, 80 & 100 km. (The routes are the same as last year, except that the confusing loop around Rouse Hill Town Centre has been removed).
There is a 500 metre section on good quality gravel, and a few hundred metres on shared path. All the rest of the route is on bitumen (of varying quality).
The routes use some of the quieter and more scenic roads around the Hawkesbury & Hills areas. There are a few good climbs & descents in there

I rode 80km last year. Will try the 100km this year.
Only concern is there will be track work that weekend and no train between Richmond to Granville

Much better price as well... I thought 60 bucks rego on day was a bit excessive.

We were free of it last year, but copped it the year before.
Just wondering, how many people does this impact? Does it mean that you can't get to the ride at all, or just that you have to find someone to get a lift with?
BTW, there are a couple of caravan/camping parks within 10 km of Rivo if that's any help - Avina & OK. Avina also have basic motel units.

There appears to be trains running between Blacktown & Penrith (but not between Granville & Blacktown). If getting to Riverstone from this section of line, it's a 13km ride from Rooty Hill station to Riverstone. Please let me know if you'd like directions.
I've heard from a couple of people who would normally travel to Rivo by train. Please post to this discussion on sydneycyclist if you would like or could offer transport to and from the ride.

The course is open between 7:30 and 12:30pm. Given time for a break or two in that period, you really need be average at least 23 kmph to do the 100km in the time. It's not a flat ride, so you need to have some fitness to do the full distance. Having said that, a number of riders have done it.
There will be cut-off points along the route. If you'd like to aim for the 100, and don't make it to the cut-off in time, you'll be directed onto the 80km route (Which cuts part of the second loop). Likewise, there are cut-offs where riders will be directed to the 55km and 30km routes.
For the longer routes, please aim to get to Rivo early. If registering on the day, I'd recommend getting there around 6.30.
Riders doing the shorter distances can get away with starting late, but not the longer rides!
The distances are slightly shorter this year, as the loop around Rouse Hill Town Centre has been removed. The true distances for the longer loops (according to Bikely) are around 97 and 76km from memory. Hopefully next year we'll add another little section into the routes that will bring the distances back up.

My experience on the 100kms Tour De Hills, starting 15 minutes late, was that there are a VERY wide range of speeds over the 100. I didn't see a huge number of finishers but I would have overtaken dozens and dozens of people (many probably doing a shorter distance as I did the second loop). I went "hardcore".Rowley Runner wrote: Is it casual and head banger hardcore on the 80/100kms?

So if you missed the first closing, you've now got a second chance.
If you intend registering on the day, it would help speed things up if you could print, fill-in, and bring with you the registration form available at http://ride2riverstone.com.au/?page_id=3.

Huge thanks to Lions & all the volunteers. Hope the fundraising side was successful!
Second time I've done the Riverstone ride & I'll be back again next year.
