"The Rules"

Postby Ken Ho » Fri Feb 24, 2012 5:48 pm

Every time someone invokes The Rules, I wonder if they take the Velominati more seriously than the Velominati take themselves.
While some of the rules are quite cool, some are obviously tongue in cheek. I mean, they do refer to themselves as "The Velominati". That alone qualifies them as having a Python sense of humour or being a bunch of Frat boys, which I suspect is closer to the mark.
Does anyone here, for example, really refer to their legs as their "guns" ?
My feeling is that unless you do, the you are breaching Rule #1, and therefore cannot quote any other rule.
Don't get me wrong, I basically like The Rules, I just don't like people beating others over the head with them.

I don't know about "guns", but a couple of weeks ago I was over taken by a group of six guys, and as the first guy went past he said "nice pegs". This kind of worried me a bit. Did he mean my bike or legs. If he meant legs, well then me and my hairy legs plan on avoiding bunches of middle aged men out for Sunday rides.

Ah, so you don't "shave your guns" then ?

Fred here.

I must really annoy some people. Surly frame, Brooks, mudguards, disc on front, no spandex shorts, no shaved legs, SPDs, MTB helmet and drop bars level with saddle. Sometimes I just wear a polo shirt instead of a cycling jersey.

If white bar tape is the proper colour, then I'll change mine to black! I hate white. That said, the rules are fun - but only that, not to be taken seriously. :) Shaved legs however are better than the porcupine look.

I'm breaking Rule #50 all the time, but comply with the espresso only idea. My favourite kind of coffee. 8)

Hairy legs, Celeste bar tape (grubby), prefers cotton t-shirt to proper jersey, but finds back pockets very handy to keep his bananananananananananas in, has rear saddle-bag on carbon roadie.
Must be a monkey called Fred.
I like the Princile of Silence though, to a point. No need for me to drop back when I'm gasping though, thte hill takes care of that detail.

Some of "The Rules" i do practice, one in particular is to make sure my Glasses are over my helmet straps, for the life of me i don't know why but i do, but generally the rules are just a laugh.

I'd never ride up along a stranger and rattle off a bunch of "Rules" found on the internet, If i knew them then Rule 5 would seem like a good one to quote.

I am certainly not one to spout rules to anyone. :)

There is one guy that rides in the Aussie national champs jersey down here. I have no problem with it at all, unless he was to tell me I was doing something wrong.

It's fun to toy with the rules.

For racing I leave my saddle bag and pump on the frame! It annoys my fellow racers cos it's so unpro and if someone does not know me I have noticed they tend to think I'm a beginner and get a bit of a shock when I know what I'm doing and attack them!!! Don't shave the legs either, can't be stuffed.

But I do have matching red bar tape and tyres. But my socks are a bit short.......

My bike and body, any other rules I'm in trouble on?

Rule #42 ... agree totally with the first part... Neither of which is a bike race.
exception to this is... Swim after a Fall.
Head to nearest beach, into the salt water, nail-brush in hand.
Scrub out stones, grit and dirt... leave open to air, never bandage.
After a couple of days, it dries. Wear as badge of honour (beats any tattoo)
