If that segment wasn't in Strava already, yes it will.

Got to work thinking I'd done well only to find my Garmin 500 didn't get a satellite lock until around halfway through my ride - needless to say the KOM's were in the first 50%. Oh well, there is always tomorrow...

that's odd. Sure you didn't forget to start it? Or possibly wheel sensor playing up?l45er wrote:Thought I'd bust out on my commute this morning to have a crack at grabbing a couple of KOM's along the way which I've held before but have since been bettered.

http://app.strava.com/rides/7254160#135691822 A nice little KOM from this morning. Only problem is when I KOM a segment, the buddies i ride with are superior and it alerts them to a segment they must KOM.

I've got to say I've been disappointed with the Garmin 500's sensitivity. I did a ride on the weekend (Mont 24 track 25km) and my Garmin 500 recorded 20.1 km, whereas my mate who was recording with Strava iPhone app, recorded pretty close to 24.6km and his map showed much better accuracy through the bends, etc. I did not have the cadence/speed sensor on (leave it on my roadie) but I did have my 500 set to record every second. It was overcast and under the pines most of the time but iPhone 4 proved to be superior.l45er wrote:Got to work thinking I'd done well only to find my Garmin 500 didn't get a satellite lock until around halfway through my ride

No downhill sections or flats in there anywhere once the climb starts... just google maps imagination.doggatas wrote:Nasty looking cat4 there TLL. Given the plateau/downhill in the middle sector i suspect this hill to be quite painful given the 10% grade average.
Just straight up to the top...view from the bottom on a nicer day .
Oh and part of it is cobbled ...thats always fun in the rain!.

What gearing are you using to get up that?toolonglegs wrote:No downhill sections or flats in there anywhere once the climb starts... just google maps imagination.doggatas wrote:Nasty looking cat4 there TLL. I'd always wondered about the usefulness of compact chainsets til I worked out how good I am not at climbing . Is 34-28 low enough?

In some situations I think an iPhone can be better as it uses the 3G network and satellites but takes readings less often. Under the trees the satellites may drop out but the 3G coverage still gives you a location. I find my Bryton takes lots more readings than the iPhone. In open terrain the GPS will be better than the iPhone but the iPhone might be better when you don't have the clear view into space.nickdos wrote:I've got to say I've been disappointed with the Garmin 500's sensitivity. I need to lose 10 as well but I still wouldn't keep up with the whippets. The weight just wont move though. Need to try a 28 I've got a 26 on now, it cant hurt. Not that I've got any climbs anywhere near as long as the ones you've got.toolonglegs wrote:I have a 53/39 with a 11-28 on the rear... I used to swap the climbing cassette to an 11-23 to race, but since I could only get a SRAM 10 speed chain at the last change (when I ripped the rear mech off) and their joining links are such a PITA it has stayed 11-28 for a while now. A compact front would go on for a REALLY big climb or a long ride with lots of nearly big climbs. But short climbs of 1 or 2 km up to 12% average are no problems...even with a compact on I wouldn't be spinning on those climbs anyway so I might as well push harder .
