Channel 7 on King St
Postby grimbo » Mon May 14, 2012 9:21 am
There was a news crew from channel 7 at the lights at the bottom of King St Sydney this morning. The interviewer was asking questions about bike commuting.
When he had finished filming, he answered our questions. He reckoned it's not another "red-light running hoons" or "Clover Moore took away my car park" story. Instead, it's "Clover Moore was right - cycle commuting had gotten really popular" story.
Hmmm, Channel 7, pro-bike, pro-Clover story. What are the chances?
NB, supposed to be on tonight.

Maybe they're trying a unique angle: Avoid red light camera fines, ride a bike.

About 350 cyclists in peak hour over the Anzac Bridge now - virtually all of that traffic shows up on King St - ie based on width vs people traveling over it, it justifies itself vs the car lanes alongside it - especially considering the parking space usage reductions they offer.
The other reality is Victoria Rd is one of the worst offenders for slow traffic, so most of the King St riders are effectively (a) making more space for people in cars over the Anzac Bridge and (b) beating them into town anyway.

We shall see if it is actually a positive cycling story.

I missed the story but it was positive. I am stunned.
Saw the camera crew this morning, they stopped filming me when I stopped at the red light. So I assumed they were not interested in cyclists who stop at reds.
But happy to be proven wrong!! Very happy.
Youtube link please!!!! Just in case I made the cut in my hot black and gold LACC rig.

I've searched high and low but can't find the story on the 7 news site or youtube. Anyone know where it could be available?

It was a positive story but what I thought was a hoot was that the !!! spammer !!! cranium reporter actually stepped-off the footpath and into the middle of a bike lane to do his piece to camera!
I wondered if he would do the same if he was reporting about a busy road?
Of course, getting Duncan Gay on to add his five cents' worth of negativity was counter-productive.

That probably has more to do with the crazy guy who put a round in through the bus windscreen and then fired into the air when the Five Oh arrived.
Another bonus with cycle commuting, if you take the bus you may be shot at.
