Well someone has to break the cycle. If there is no investment in cycleways, no one would be game to ride their bikes. Equally it doesn't mean the moment they build it, a mass of riders will eventuate. Riders are going to take some time coming out of hiding and giving it a go.

If that bloke is worried about his business, perhaps he should open a bike shop or a cafe on Albert St .....

I've got an ideological bent too! :D

I know this will upset a lot of people but personally I feel this is a step backwards for cycling. Its just reinforcing the idea that motorists have that cyclist dont belong on the road and just one other thing to piss them off. When cyclists and motorists get to the end of the seperated lanes then it'll be fun and games. They should be pushing the concept of vehicular cycling.

Good point Tally, I do 90% of me roadie work that way.

Personally, I'd like to see more thought at chokepoints, the big roundabout at the top of Elizabeth St Melb for example is bad enough in a smokebox, scary as on the velo. About 9 entry/exit lanes, 2 and 3 lanes, zebras and trams on all sides. I've seen a lotta bikes being pushed on the zebras to stay away from the craziness.

...whatever the road rules, self-preservation is the absolute priority for a cyclist when mixing it with motorised traffic.
