New baggage policy - Virgin Australia

Postby RonK » Wed May 30, 2012 10:04 pm

Last week when my wife returned from Hobart, at the Virgin check-in counter she was informed of a new baggage policy, which is based on pieces rather than weights. Standard baggage allowance is one 1 piece weighing up to 23kg, however now you can check in up to nine pieces of luggage, for an additional charge of course.

And last night I booked flights to New Zealand for a return tour of the South Island, and was able to book an extra piece of luggage at a cost of $25 each way, for a total of 46kg, so now the bike and its wheeled bag fits easily within the baggage allowance without resorting to loading up my cabin bag with the heavy bits.

Virgin baggage policy details here.

Thats pretty good.

Also - i am flying with JetStar, i pre-purchased a 40kg luggage allowance for 45$, plus you get your standard 10kg on board so cant complain either.

QANTAS have been doing that for a while too.

But it seems to oscillate a bit; sometimes one airline has a helpful policy in relation to taking bicycles and another doesn't, and they seem to change fairly frequently.

This is good news from Virgin...

Early this year, flying Virgin Australia from Brisbane to Cairns on a rewards Business Class flight, I was allowed to have up to 69 kg's of checked baggage. :)

Thanks Ron. I was considering a long train journey rather than the hassle of travelling by air with all the heavy touring paraphernalia. I'll reconsider as Virgin have some attractive sale prices atm.

Good to see Virgin Australia have seen the light. When I looked at flying with Virgin to Darwin having to pay over $300 to take the touring bike drove me over to Qantas who charged me ~$25.
